I am a typical gullible Englishman, my thai girl ( woman) ( we are both getting on a bit), friend was married for a day to an american who thought the marriage ceremony he went through with her, was not a marriage ceremony as he understood nil Thai. From that time she has used the title Mrs, but uses her family name not the marriage name. He has sent US court documents to her showing the marriage to be void as he understood nil, also divorced papers, including nisi.(She has shown me all these papers) She still calls herself Mrs. using (what she says is ) her family name

She claims Thai law compels her to use the married title 'Mrs'. Does Thai law compel Thai women to use the married title, even though she is divorced?

I am concerned she may be married to another person. she has Mrs on her passport too, using the 'family' name.

What do you advise / suggest. mick

Wrong forum, but anyway:-

AFAIK Once married a Thai woman cannot return to being 'Miss', she can use whatever name she likes (some Thais change names as often as changing shirts).

My wife changed back to her maiden name when we got married coz she didn't want to keep her previous married name nor did she want mine :o

There's been a change in the law. A once married woman now has the choice of using Mrs. นาง or reverting back to Miss นางสาว.

I don't see how somebody could get married without realising it because he would have had to get documents from his Embassy first. The ceremony alone is not legally binding in any sense and so how could she divorced to somebody that she was never married to in the first place? Something doesn't add up here.

IIRC a recent change in Thai law now allows women to use "Miss", even if they are currently married although I cannot be certain.

In the past, even though our marriage wasn't registered my wife was required to change her title to นาง (Mrs) when she got a passport. The reason was that we had a child. Later on when she was applying for a mortgage the bank wanted her to produce divorce papers as they didn't believe she'd never been officially married.

As others have stated the law has now changed.

The whole story is unbelievable for me.

Even if it's true, it doesn't matter if the girl is treated as naang or naangsaao. It doesn't matter what other people think. What matters is her feelings, her hurt heart. I'd feel sorry with such a one-day-Mrs.

As she cannot do a divorce as she wasn't married [...], she isn't divorced. She probably voluntary started to use the title. Or she is still married to her [real] Thai husband, you know the Thai guy hanging around, claiming to be her helping close brother?

But from what I gather, as the gentleman went through a ceremony he didn't know what it meant but later thought [was told?] was a marriage ceremony, and then went back to get court papers showing it wasn't...why? Did the woman try to extort money from him, trying to claim half of his in the end of that one day?

Someone is fishy...

Second that:

Submitted by Sahil Nagpal on Wed, 06/04/2008 - 11:46. window.google_render_ad();Bangkok - Dozens of women took advantage of a Thai law that became effective Wednesday giving them the right to choose if they are a Miss or a Mrs, local media reported.

Most who went to district government offices Wednesday to change their titles were divorced and wanted to be Miss again after years being a Mrs.

"I am very happy to go back to Miss again. It is wrong that women had to still be Mrs after divorce," Pirana Tohsophon, 60, who remained a Mrs for 30 years after she was divorced, told local television.

Before the new law went into effect when a woman got married she had to change her title to Mrs, and had to keep that title even if she got divorced or became a widow. (dpa)

Women in Thailand may choose one of two titlles Miss , or Mrs . They do not have the choice of Ms. which means " no one's dam_n business if I'm married or not. " YOu know likle men enjoy with Mr.

Wrong. I was aghast when I got my driver's license I had to be either Mrs. or Miss as I don;t think it should be my title should be relevant to my marriage status.

There is no Ms. in this sexist country, Ms. being like Mr. is for men. who don't have to have their marital status printed on their license
