ANTI-GOVERNMENT demonstrators have agreed to allow flights to resume from Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi international airport after a week-long blockade, a protest leader said. "As of this moment the PAD (People's Alliance for Democracy) has allowed flights to take off and land immediately, both passenger and cargo flights," senior alliance member Somkiat Pongpaiboon said.

The PAD seized Suvarnabhumi and the smaller Don Mueang domestic airport last week, stranding 350,000 passengers and causing massive damage to the Thai economy.

If this is a joke, it's not funny.

And it's very doubtful that anyone's leaving "immediately". :o

SMS from BKK Post...

PAD has accepted AOTS demands and will allow flights within the next 24 Hrs ...

lets wait and see

Yes, many a slip twixt cup and lip.

BUT, this contradicts info from the airport manager that it would take a week to run all the diagnostic checks on the systems etc. Okay the PAD will allow flights but will they allow staff and passengers? :o

Have any AoT staff capable of assessing the state of the airport actually visited yet?

Or is it just......

PAD - "you can fly now"

Another report from the Australian newspaper:

ANTI-GOVERNMENT demonstrators have agreed to allow flights to resume from Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi international airport after a week-long blockade, a protest leader said.

"As of this moment the PAD (People's Alliance for Democracy) has allowed flights to take off and land immediately, both passenger and cargo flights," senior alliance member Somkiat Pongpaiboon said.

The PAD occupied Suvarnabhumi and the smaller Don Mueang domestic airport last week, stranding 350,000 passengers and causing massive damage to the Thai economy.

Thailand's airport authority confirmed there was an agreement with protesters, saying flights may be able to resume if there are no "technical problems".

"We have reached an agreement with PAD to start clearing protesters from the passenger zone to reopen Suvarnabhumi Airport," said Vudhihaandhu Vichairatama, chairman of the board of Airports of Thailand.

"But how soon depends on technical issues. If there is no technical problem the first flights would resume within 24

Many international media thought today’s decision opened the way for new elections which is not true. Hereby they thought PAD had no more interest in staying at the airports which is wrong as well. Cargo flights have however been allowed as from today.

They said in the news that if there were no technical issues then they would be ready for flights within 24 hours.

The issues of damage, IED's, barbed wire blocking accesses etc etc might be classed as technical issues.

I still can't believe it.....I wonder how long it will be before this happens again?

How come Australian News are reporting this but CNN and Thai News don't?

AOT president ready to arrange special zone for PAD rallies at airportsPublished on December 2, 2008

Airports of Thailand Acting President Serirat Prasutanond Tuesday asked the People's Alliance for Democracy to leave Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airports, after the Constitution Court dissolved three coalition parties.

Serirat said that now that Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat was disqualified by the ruling, PAD has its wish satisfied. They should leave the airports which are the major airports to handle passengers and air cargo, to reduce further damage.

He added that if the PAD wants to remain at the airports, AOT is ready to arrange a special area so that the protest would not affect the operations.

It was reported that some PAD leaders agree with AOT's proposal but it is upto the decision of all leaders who will meet this evening.
