camerata Posted November 10, 2009 Share Posted November 10, 2009 In an earlier post FabianFred indicated a bodhisattva is never born a female.If this is correct then women can never become bodhisattva & therefore also can never be a Buddha. I wonder if there is any statement to that effect by the Buddha in the suttas? The number of former buddhas differs in different parts of the Canon, but I believe they were all male. However, that isn't the same as saying there could never be a female bodhisattva (in the Theravadin sense). As for Mahayana, Tara is a female bodhisattva.
