Laser technology to nab speeding drivers

BANGKOK: -- Police will introduce laser technology from the US to help catch speeding motorists over the New Year season, the Assistant National Police Chief, Pol. Lt. Gen. Thawatchai Chulasukhon, revealed today.

Pol. Lt. Gen. Thawatchai unveiled the equipment during a meeting of senior police officers on measures to crack down on traffic accidents over the upcoming holiday season.

The police will focus on the arrest of motorist breaking traffic regulations, drunk drivers and vehicles travelling at more than 90 kilometres per hour.

Costing over Bt1 million per machine, the laser equipment automatically assesses the speed of passing vehicles, while taking photographs which can be used as evidence.

Pol. Lt. Gen. Thawatchai expressed confidence that the introduction of the equipment would make motorists think twice about speeding.

The government hopes to slash road fatalities by 10 percent over the New Year season this year.

Last year over 600 people died on Thailand’s roads during the New Year period.

The speed camera arrives!!!!!!!!

Good economic move, 1,000,000 / 2000 baht 500 speeding tickets, camera nearly paid for!!!!

The question is, does Thailand have the technology for registering cars etc so they can find the ownner/driver?

Do second hand cars newly bought from other provinces have to have registration plates, or is it only new vehicles which get driven without plates while waiting for the registration process to complete?

Holy smokes... US$25,000 for each?!? Someone is making a very tidy profit along the way. They don't cost anywhere near that much.

Not mentioned was funding, but I'm guessing the hapless Thai taxpayer is footing the bill once again.

They have had radar speed trap technology here in Thailand for the best part of 20 years, and that has not helped.

Why will expensive laser guns make any difference??

Toys for the boys.....................

The present technology works perfect:

"Hey you, speeding, 102 km/h. Pay me 1000, ok?"

They don't need a machine for this, in fact they stop you without anything and

find a bugger who accepts, or is in a hurry to catch a plane, e.g. at the exit ramp for Don Muang airport.

Thats US$10,000 for the camera and US$5,000 for each high ranking police men involved in the contract, thats per camera of course :o

In a recent court case in NZ, the boys in blue were rather embarrassed. A motorist who rec’d a ticket for speeding after he told the incompetent Mr. Plod that he was not, had a GPS on board. :D

The GPS showed that he was actually 2km under the speed limit. The case was thrown out and plod was told to be more careful when pointing the unit. Stupid ,jumped up plicks. :o

Sheesh again.

TIT Indeed!

Well that would be *all* of them - noodle carts included - so who needs a laser ?!?
