I wonder if any one could tell me if all those thousands of people who were stranded at the airports in Thailand had to pay overstay.

It was reported that provided they could prove the airort closure prevented them from leaving overstay fines would be waived. Depends on what the immigration officers deem "proof" though.

There's been no personal experiences reported to my knowledge.
