It works. But don't forget to bring a passphoto, as you can't have them made at the airport.

They are open 24 hours a day. You first need to get your boarding pass at check in and then go to the left side of immigration, before going to immigration itself. Cost is 1,000 for a single, 3,800 for a multiple. The process doesn't take long.

I am also looking to get the TM8 prior to a holiday trip, easy at an immigration office - unless you are not close to such an office my POV is that I should have it in place prior to going to the airport. I'm in Pattaya so I understand it is easy to say this.
