To the OP, have not been there for a year but Hat Yai is a quiet, very pleasant, small provincial Thai town, with enough Europeans, and enough civilised amenities* to make you feel comfortable. Nowt wrong with the place, can't say any more than that really.

*i.e. bars, eating places, shops, hospitals etc.
