Hernia Repair- Who Knows Where It's Best And How ?

Recommended Posts

Hi all I have double sided hernias which I would like to get repaired during January. I also have Bupha Thailand health insurance.

I know that there is a new technique now to use key hole surgery. Has anybody had this done or knows more about it?

Are there recommendations for good international hospitals between Nong Khai and Bangkok? I was never admitted to hospital before, so have no idea!

I know that in the UK and Germany these procedures are often done on a day basis without admission- I am somewhat surprised that hospitals here talk about 3 days admission at least and possible stay in ICU- I find this a it over the top- and scary. Is this how hospitals here try to make a bit more money from the insurance? Thanks for your comments Stefan

Stefan,

I believe the bast care is from Bumrumgrad hospital in BKK. The doctor i used is a specialist in key hole surgery but is against using it for hernia repairs stating that the best results are acheived from the open surgery technique. I had my hernia fixed there and was admitted and operated on day 1 and returned home the next day. This is only if you are able to get around sufficiently and can use the toilet without too much discomfort. The recovery at home takes a couple of weeks of not too much heavy or strenious work then a gradual build up to normal activities after that ..... i was playing golf after 6 weeks with no problems.

For me the comforting thing was the doctor's experience in carrying out hernia operations and the hospital facilities.

The surgeon i used was Dr Avtar (Indian) and the price 1 year ago was 90K. The fee included any follow up treatment which i did not take up due to the travelling. The doctor said i could have the stitches removed locally if i wanted to save on the travelling which i decided to do at home using my wife's steady hand.

One of the local hospitals here BPH )Pattaya) quoted me a slightly less price but i was put off from my previous experiences with them plus the doctor dropped a DVD and his pen whilst he was giving me the details of the operation which also made me feel uneasy!!

Hope this is of some help

had mine done private at bangkok/pattaya hospital and the room was like a 10 star hotel and awesome food.Stayed 2 nights and they even put a bed in for my gf and fed her too,but thats private and they just added it to the bill.originaly the surgeon said 1 day but when i had been booked in he said 2 days to relax more.

perfect op,brilliant after care and i had 6 staples and they were removed totaly painlessly 6 days later,he said i was a quick healer.aA little bit of pain for a few days and was difficult to get into my thai friends truck after iw as discharged and bloody sore every time he went over a bump, but all in all perfect and higly recommended.I paid thr insurance jsut over 100,000 baht but the op was about 50,000 if paying cash.

Thanks to all of you for the replies! At the end it's a matter of trust, isn't it? Was in Bumrungrad today for a first check- and yes, I am a bit put off as it is a factory. My insurance would pay, so the price does not concern me too much, but I felt a bit too quick in and out. By accident(????) the doctor was the same (Avtar) but he said very little about his experiences. He never had training outside Thailand (which does not mean he is not good, but it also does not mean he is). So- is he against keyhole surgery as he has problems with it or is he genuinely good at it and sees problems that I can not find anywhere else on the net? He talked about having more likely complications when doing keyhole.... So- I am not sure what to do. At the moment I think I just would like to see one or two other guys (some have training from the UK for example) to get a feel about the range. I have never been in hospital ever and I don't like the idea of not being in control of what is happening- I'd rather put my own thumb ont he knots when they want to stitch u up again- ! Is there anybody around who had the things fixed with keyhole????? Cheerio Stefan

i had staples which the surgeon at bangkok/pattaya use because they are quick and easy to apply. Why get paranoid about key hole or not??? the open surgery is no problem and staples out in 6-10 days with no pain.

For the person that commented on GOV NAVY HOSPITAL. I have an epigastric hernia that I am planning to go to the same hospital for. Can you tell me what type of hernia operation you had.

Stefan, there are many good hospitals here, govt, and private, and most can do the job for this basic operation... Bamrungrad and Samitivej are two of the top of the line, but they are also the most costly. Bangkok Hospital is excellent. Sikarin Hospital is good. Camillian Hospital on Sukhuimvit 55 has done well for me as well over the years. I suggest you call several and get quotes, unless price is not a factor, in which case go to Bamrungrad.

I thought this matter was resolved because not long ago I learned (what turns out to be mis-information) that Khon Kaen RAM Hospital now offers Laparoscopic "key hole" surgery for hernia repair. I just met with the surgeon and he in fact does NOT do them.

OK back to the drawing board! :) Cutting board? :D Do I mess with traveling to Bangers for the key hole surgery or have the traditional procedure done close to home?

My research on the internet tends to favor the key hole surgery because it is less invasive, less painful and means less down time and faster recovery. However, docs in Thailand do not seem overly-enthusiastic about the newer surgery. Is that lack of enthusiasm because it requires more skill? Or is the newer procedure simply hover-hyped and over-rated as a couple of OPs here suggest?

If I had key hole surgery in Bangers, how soon would I be fit to return home to Khon Kaen, anyone know?

Thanks, lah!

Aloha,

Rex
