Bringing Children To Thailand

Featured Replies

Hi,

I am married to a Thai, with whom I have two children. We live in Denmark, and except for the wife we all have Danish citizenship. Now, if we were to move to Thailand, will the children automatically be allowed to stay there without the hasle of obtaining visas?

Thanks,

BoB.

You should contact the Thai embassy and get Thai passports for them. That way there will be no requirements for visas to enter. They enter Thailand on their Thai passport and use their passports for Denmark when they return.

See this embassy webpage for info: http://www.thaiembassy.dk/webpage_consular.htm

A lot of the info is in Thai so you will need your wifes help unless you read Thai.

Edit: Here is a link to the Thai embassy in London it has the best info in English I have found.

As their mother is a Thai national, the children automatically (also) have Thai nationality. On how to register their birth and get a passport follow up on the links Joe provided.

With their Thai passport they casn get into Thailand without any problem, with their Danish passport they can get into the EU without any problem. When traveling between Thailand and Denmark alsways have both passport with them. They will need to show always both pssport ad check-in at an airport, to confirm they don't need a visa. Both airlines and immigration are familiar with dual nationality.

Thankyou for your replies :-)

As I understand you, you suggest that the children should have both Thai and Danish citizenship? However, Denmark is one of those countries that won't allow multiple citizenship. Here is a quote from wiki on multiple citizenship:

"Some countries consider multiple citizenship undesirable and take measures to prevent it; this may take the form of an automatic loss of a citizenship if another citizenship is acquired voluntarily (e.g., in Denmark, Japan, Singapore and India) or criminal penalties for exercising another citizenship (e.g., for carrying a foreign passport in Saudi Arabia). Others may allow a citizen to have any number of nationalities. However, since each country decides for itself who its citizens are, based solely on its own laws and generally without regard for the laws of other countries, it is quite possible for a given individual to be considered a citizen by two or more countries even if some or all of these countries forbid dual or multiple citizenship."

By the way, both children are born in Denmark.

You need to see what the laws of Denmark say. Some allow it until the child reaches a certain age then at that time they can choose which one they want. That is how Singapores are written.

Thailand does allow it.

Ubonjoe is correct, you have to consult Danish law for this. Remember that your children don't aquire Thai nationality voluntarily, (in essence they choose to get Thai nationality), they have it automatically by way of law. That can make a huge difference, as many countries allow it in that case.
