Massive Electronic Waste Seizure Exhumed at Laem Chabang Port
File photo for reference only In a striking discovery, the Customs Department has seized a staggering 256 tonnes of illicit electronic waste at the busy Laem Chabang port in Chonburi province. The waste, hidden across ten containers, spotlighted the ongoing issue of illegal hazardous material trade. Acting on a tip-off, Chakkrit Uthensut, the department's Director General, executed the inspection that led to the uncovering of these hazardous materials. Marketed misleadingly as "scrap and used metals," the nine containers from Japan and one from Hong Kong, were promptly confiscated. This importation glaringly violates national customs regulations and the internationally recognised Basel Convention, which regulates the movement and disposal of hazardous waste. Electronic waste poses severe environmental and health risks if not managed properly, underscoring the gravity of this breach. The discovery emphasises the necessity for stringent checks and international cooperation to combat such illegal activities in the future. Questions now arise on how these shipments bypassed strict port inspections initially, pressing for an overhaul in enforcement protocols. -- 2025-01-15 -
