A friend and I want to buy a small boat for fishing on rivers and lakes here in Thailand. We have no idea yet exactly what type of boat . A zodiac type would be nice but I think they are a bit pricey although they are great for carrying around and make storage easy.

Does anyone know of any local manufacturers/distributors around Chonburi, Pattaya, BKK?

Used is fine. Have checket Pattaya Mail ads and Phuket Gazette.

I have searched a bit on the net but haven't found much.

Cheers,

Penzman

Have you looked at those moulded plastic boats for sale along the roads heading towards Pattaya?

They may be a bit small for your needs, but will be a cheap alternative to a RIB. They are small enough to throw in the back of a pick up and you would just need a small outboard to putter along with.

It all depends how far away from land you want to head. I think they would be OK for river fishing, but wouldn't head out to sea in one.

Found one!

3.65 m. long.

Moulded pvc. Filled with foam.

About 13 000 baht, discount if paid cash.

Found in a shop where pvc ice boxes pvc articles are sold.

Comes with oares and has back plate to mount an outboard motor.

Can carry 400kg.

The shop owner says it can carry 6 to 8 pasengers  :o standing up like in the pick up trucks maybe...  Enough room  for 3 or 4 to sit comfortably.

Aussie mate and I are going fishing this Sunday, Ban Pakhong river.  :D

A good sized dingy for a very reasonable price - sounds like a great buy and I'm sure you will have lots of fun. Do you know if you can boat and fish any river and lake, or will you need to obtain some licence or permission first? I guess this sort of thing is unrestricted but I'd like to know the official rule if there is one. I've considered doing the same thing myself though I'd need to buy a pickup first. Maybe one day.

I haven t heard or read about any licence for small boat or fishing licences so far being required. A licence may be required if the boat is fitted with an outboard motor. We only have paddles for now, outboard motor will come later.

As for carrying the boat, my friend and I only have small cars but hire a truck to take us to the river and back for 500 baht.

You can join if you feel like fishing sometime, just PM me. We live in the Chonburi area.

Cheers,

I wonder what size outboard you could put on one of those plastic boats? Perhaps a 200hp oil injected Mercury with a hydraulic jackplate and a bullet shaped lower unit? :o:D

For fishing in Thailand you dont need any type of fishing license. Just fish where ever you fancy, as long as someone doesn't own the land. I guess someone will tell you if they do.

I have 2 fishing boats which i use for freshwater fishing. one a 14 ft Trailered fibreglass boat with a 50HP Outboard. This was made in Thailand and technically requires a license as a powered boat, but as long as you don't take it down past Chumphon where they have the road block for smuggled goods out of Malaysia, its not a problem.

For the dinghy you have, you wont need any license at all.

You could buy a Short shaft 5.5-10HP outboard, which second hand should set you back around 10-15,000 Baht. Loads of then in Pattaya/Chonburi, i would guess. The other option is a trolling motor which are hard to come by, most are imported through Singapore and are very expensive compared to US Prices. But you can pick them up second hand if you know where to look. But then you need a battery, car batteries wear out in no time, but i managed to get some decent cheap no-name deep cycle batteries from a Solar power company. Might be better to stick to rowing for a while, its more fun anyway.

You can also buy little Fibreglass dinghys which you can pick up for around 20,000 and up, but talking 40,000+ for a reasonable one.

Penzman I will be back in Thailand in around 3 weeks, PM me if you need any help on baits, tactics or sourcing equipment, i have plenty of Thai friends who know a whole lot more than i will ever know about fishing in Thailand.

Good luck with the fishing, hope you catch.

where did you find it?

do they last?

anybody knows about buying a small boat in Bangkok?

how does pvc compare to the motored wooden ones (which thai use on canals to sell fruits/vegetables)?

Bought it near here at a shop that sells pvc products only, iceboxes, water tanks, etc.

They must last longer than wood I guess, maintenance free, no rot or leaks. It,s a bit heavier than the aluminium fishing boats I'm familiar with but I like the fact that it's one piece, no rivets/joints that loosen up after years of slapping waves.

Should a hole or crack ever appear, PVC is easy to patch.

Whilst I am mindful that this is a rather old thread, the question is evergreen so I thought that tacking this on late would still be of value to readers.

There are a number of small boat options for very reasonable prices - starting from 14,000 baht + plus motor

Aluminum -

Fibre Glass -

Plus the original poster mentioned buying a Rotamould boat

I have one of these and it has served me well so far.

Ugly as sin but extremely robust - hammer blows just bounce off and you can "weld" the plastic with an gas burner and some scrap offcuts.

Might seem like a small point but I abuse mine on rocks and submerged trees, I punched a hole in mine running over a tree stump one day and it didn't blink the full foam core makes them unsinkable - I just patched it up when I got home.

With a bit of transom reinforcement you can get a reasonable outboard on these.

If I had a bigger budget I would go for the Aluminum but they are 3 x

Nice thanks for sharing, I'm looking at boats too as I regularly go snakehead fishing. However I have heard that many reservoirs prohibit motors

I would guess I have been fishing at over 100 dams in Northern Thailand the last 2 years - there are only a few that don't allow "speed boats" but generally they are the smaller dams anyway - the one large dam exception is Mae Kuang near Doi Saket.

The closest I have gotten to a definition of a "speedboat" is over 12 ft and a high power outboard - even though my boat is 12 1/2 ft I have a small 4 HP auxiliary and an electric trolling motor so I take off the bigger outboard when I go to those dams and have never had an issue.

I believe you are located near Bangkok - I don't know if its different down that way.

I have looked into it a bit more and it appears that Bangphra doesn't allow any boats that use oil but electric trolling motors are fine.

BTW your boat looks ideal.

Anyone know where I can buy a western style canoe, or as a second choice a 12'+ sit-on-top kayak in or near Bangkok. Preferably used because I'm cheap.

Don't know of a canoe made locally, but see them on the local reservoirs.

I prefer fishing from their Nomad, light and nimble. But if your looking for something with more storage and better straight line tracking the Moken 12 is better. Not only can you stand in one (if your comfortable with that, your size and balance will factor in), you can mount an electric motor for more versatility.

Its not the size of your boat -its the motion of the ocean!

I almost got in trouble with thai police when my Gf caught me scraping the barnacles off of my dinghy! ????

what do you mean, is it illegal to scraping the barnacles ?

I dont think so because big ocean going cargo ships get their hull cleaned regularly in Sriracha area by specialist companies engaged in this business.

You'd have no problems with the GF scraping the barnacles off your Boston Whaler.

Id suggest asking at any water storage tank place you see, they usually carry a bunch of other stuff like boats/ornaments that you might not expect to find there
