Elephants travel to Phang-nga to help relief efforts

PHANG-NGA: -- Elephants from camps in Thailand's former capital of Ayutthaya are helping search for missing victims of last week's tsunamis in the country's Phang-nga Province.

The elephants, the first two of which arrived in Takua Pa district yesterday, will help search for the remaining corpses in areas where large machinery cannot be brought in.

They will also help in the clean-up operation, clearing bits of broken vehicles from roads, and search deep in the jungle for people still missing after the disaster.

Today they were joined by six more elephants, which will be set to work in the beach resort of Khao Lak, which bore some of the worst tsunami damage.

Elephant camps from Ayutthaya aim to send a total of 15 elephants to assist the relief operation.
