Microsoft has announced how it will package Windows Vista's successor, Windows 7. And as ever, Microsoft has put segmentation ahead of clarity.

The one bright spot in Microsoft's Windows 7 news is that - contrary to some reports - it won't add a brand new edition solely for netbooks.

Six (!) versions will be sold, full article available at The Register

Until right now there is NOT any confirmation about how many and which versions of Windows 7 will be sold.

Any speculation about that are just rumor. Even the article (Link posted by slackula) is just rumors and didn't contains provable sources.

The latest official statement done by Microsoft about the versions of Windows 7 was from MSFT to Allinsider on January 26. 2009:

The statement:

Microsoft is currently evaluating a variety of ways to meet the OS needs of our users. We aren’t ready to discuss the Windows 7 SKU plan at this time. We will share more information when we are further along the development path.

The SKU set you’ll see in the Windows 7 Beta is preliminary. We will continue to take customer feedback from the Beta test period into account as we refine the SKU set for Windows 7 and will share more information when we are further along the development path.

As long as there isn't an official proclamation from Microsoft, all claims about version, price and release date of Windows 7 are just rumor! It is suggested to stay out of rumors and post provable fact only.

Here's my guess on the different versions:

1. Broken, for netbooks.

2. Crippled Limited Edition

3. Home Bloat

4. Pro, Parental controls now called User Mangler.

5. It ain't Server but, ooh is that minesweeper?

6. Recommended hardware: Cray XT4.

7. Install Linux and save yourself the hassle

This is nothing more than a service pack for Vista with a half baked attempt to fix the inherent problems therein.

Good luck to all of you who shelled out big bucks for Vista, you are about to get bent over yet again by MSFT.

Nothing of that applies!

Wrong topic titel and rumors at first and now that!

For someone without provable experiences something what is again totally unfounded, to tell it with "sweet" words.

Stop off topic post's please and keep your post's constractive and with useful information. Crap like the above isn't welcome.

Actually Microsoft has announced the versions of Windows 7 for release, although no pricing is available at this time.

Thanks for that info which was just come up online today early morning local time Thailand.

Yesterday as I had checked, that report wasn't available and the time difference to Thailand is -15 hour.

Cheers.

My expectations are that it will be lighter, faster and run everything that Windows XP Pro can run. After it is released I'll depend on user reports and decide based on the user's experiences. I wasn't impressed with Vista although I never bought it so I only had chances to play with it and never actually used it. I did try to help a friend of mine set everything up and we were both confused with all the prompts.
