Thailand's top disaster expert once foretold the 2004 tsunami. Now, he says the nation's capital will be submerged by 2030.

You're right. It's been reported pretty widely, although not really in Thailand.

Guess I shouldn't buy that condo after all.

very interesting post...

here is a direct link to the story

Bangkok Sinking

the second point by many experts is that Bangkok is STINKING too.

Clearly the source of that article, Mr. Smith, is unaware that the solution, giant pumps, has already been proposed and that there is no room for argument........What?@!?, they haven't started on the pumps yet?!?

Yet another thread calling out all the koolaid drinkers. It's like offering heroin to an addict. They can't resist.

Can't wait, the diving should be spectacular!

Hi,

I wanted to post this in 'News Clippings' but denied permission. ...

Perhaps TV should have an "Old News" forum, open to all? :o

This is very very old news.

About 30 years ago the government at that time asked Dutch engineering companies for advise. The problem seems to be that the Bangkok metropolitan pumped up too much water to meet consumption. If I recall it correct Bangkok was sinking about 1cm every year.

There was even a rumour that Thailand would build a new capital for that reason. Barnhan proposed that Suphan Buri would be a good location.

And the global warming up was not yet an issue at that time.

There where some articles about it in the BKK Post in the late 70's or early 80's of last century if I remember correctly.

Global Warming is a Hoax. You'll see.

Acid rain, ozone layer, overpopulation will kill hundreds of millions.

It is one of the public myths that are present in all societies.

Govt officials like it though.

Nothing like funding to keep their party and perks going.

Fact; CO2 is only 38 of every 100,000 molecules of air.

Does that sound like the makings of a catastrophe ?

Fact: Satellite and air baloon measurements of the atmosphere have

shown the temperature ot be constant over the last 30 years.

No dispute about this data anywhere.

Relax.

We have far more important problems to tackle.

Dont be distracted.

Malaria, hunger, malnutrition, AIDS, Educational declines,

Govt spending gone wild, lunatic defacto dictators like Robert Mugabee killing his

own people, North Korea, Iran, and more

I blame Al Gore for all this.

what is acid rain,if it is not caused by toxic chemicals released into the atmosphere?what causes the ozone layer(a natural occurence) to protect the earth from extreme harmful sunrays. But i do see your point about other pressing problems.

I'm sure most Thais who live along the edge of Chao Phraya river realise their areas are sinking. I'm talking as a person who had seen what happens to my childhood school.

Having spend twelve years in this boarding school (Khema) in the 60s. Years later, had heard that the owner ( price khasemsri) had to move this school to the new location because of land disputed between two prince brothers. The other brother won the judgement. But this brother had not done any thing to the land he had fought for.

Just let all the school buildings decaying on an empty land.

More than two decades had passed before I went back to see my old school. I was chocked :o to see more than one third of land are under water. Consider that in my time, from the edge of river to the school front gate was quite long about one km, now its around two third of dry land where I could walk around.

Looking back, the brother might have known what we now know- BKK is sinking :D .

Eratum:

An old man can make mistakes in dates;

Its was not 30 but about 20 years ago.

This must be early 90's
