Hello,

I am planning to stay for a month in Thailand but also to travel to Laos and Malaysia.

So when I arrive I will get a visa waiver for 30 days.

However if I would go to Nong Khai in the first week and cross the border, I will get a 15 day stamp in my passport on return and and will be out by a week ?

Will the orginal 30 days override the second 15 day stamp ??

It's not a big deal as I can made changes in my travel plans, but it just occurred to me that it is kind of strange.

As soon as you leave the country your permit to stay from your original entry is lost. When you re-enter you would only get 15 days.

While in Vientiane you could get a single entry tourist visa at the Thai conulate. That would give you a 60 day permit to stay. Then if you wanted to leave the country again you could get a re-entry permit that would allow you to stay for the remainder of your 60 day permit to say.

Ubonjoe, can you keep a 30-day extension alive with a re-entry permit?

Yes

You could even go to immigration and apply for the extension and re-entry permit at the same.

Thanks ubonjoe,

Great help as always.

Planning to fly to Penang for a couple of days, that will solve the problem.

Michigan, your case raises an interesting issue.

Most visitors to Thailand are tourists like you. They know they get 30 days on arrival and can easily find that airlines will board them if they have a RT ticket going back within 30 days. No travel agent or ticket agent is going to tell them about the land border 15 day stamp if they are just purchasing an air ticket, so people taking such trips could easily be caught by surprise when returning from these local trips. Its another annoyance for tourists and makes Thailand less attractive as the SE Asian tourism hub.
