I understood via the grapevine (yes, I cannot remember where unfortunately) that it is possible for a kindergarten teacher to obtain a workpermit without having a degree. This particular grapevine said that there was a change in the policy for Kinderg teachers only. Could the very wise souls on this forum please enlighten me about the exact criteria for a getting a workpermit, or point me into the direction where I can research this??? Pretty please!!

I know teachers without degrees who have obtained work permits without degrees. It's more difficult and you will need to find a sympathetic school, but in a government school it depends on the requirements specified in the contract between you and the school. Thai government schools cannot employ foreign nationals directly. The agreement is called อัตราจ้างพิเศษ in Thai. A private school can support your application by using a director's letter.

This link will take you to an interview with the MOE. The only interview I have ever seen with the MOE in Thailand. It's a bit old but I think it still sums up the current situation in Chiang Mai quite well.

I checked out that interview, and although there were a few very valid points raised, I still cannot find a reference to the one law/ decision / published statement that gives the specific criteria for workpermits. I need to get that one line stating that ..... a workpermit may be issued to a person /.....

But no worries, I'll keep looking!

Thanks for the input so far

The Holy Grail

Unfortunately it's highly unlikely that you will find an official source of explicit, clear and unambiguous information written in English (or Thai!). Provincial government offices value and protect their power. This means they may, or may not, do what has been done for others in other provinces. Welcome to Thailand

I am wondering if I were to receive a TEFL certificate and an Associates degree be enough to find a English teaching job in the Surin area? Is there any TEFL certification that is more credible than others? If so which?

Thank you

If your TEFL course has 120 face-to-face training hours, 6 1-hour teaching practices and evidence of its licensing/accreditation (school licence number on the certificate/website) then you'll be OK.

I don't know Surin and I don't remember any jobs listed on ajarn that were in Surin but there will be many positions. Unless you have a contact there, you'll need to visit schools and present yourself. Now's a good time of the year as the new academic year starts early May and many schools want teachers signed up before Songran (early April).

It is possible to get a job in a government school. however, I offered to work twice a week without salary, but in exchange for a work permit. This is in Thoeng, small town in Chiangrai.

they granted it, but now my question is whether I will need to produce a police clearance and whether i'll need to pay income tax with this work permit.

any help would be appreciated. thanks.
