Just arrived back in Oz after 3 months in LOS and have a thirst for Mekhong /soda and ice. I usually bring a supply with me but this time luggage constraints prevented me from doing so. Is it a whiskey or rum. Sorry to all you whiskey/scotch lovers out there but to me whiskey tastes like lighter fluid :o I drank a lot of Bundy in my rugby playing days mixed with coke or, in winter, orange juice. (Don't knock it til you've tried it) What I am after is a substitute for Mekhong that I can drink while I'm in Australia. Anybody have any suggestions as to something similar in taste to my beloved Mekhong.

Waiting in anticipation, กระดิ่ง

Wow! I though Mekhong whiskey was something non-Thais only drank on a dare.

Only kidding -- each to their own.

Good luck finding an Aussie version.

It certainly is an 'acquired taste'. I remember seeing it for sale at Y & Js bottle shop in Melbourne years ago for around $30 a bottle (!), so you may be able to find a place that stocks it. Thankfully, not even the cheapest local whiskies go anywhere near the taste of Mekhong, so I think you'll be out of luck with substitutes. If you take a bottle of the cheapest whisky available and add a third quantity of metho, I reckon you will be close to the taste. Seriously. But each to their own, I suppose.

(If you are thinking of Thai rum, you are probably thinking of Sang Som.)

You should not have any problems mate!most asian minimarts in Brisbane area sell it, mind you aussie Bottle shops sell lots of substitutes for Beer such as Tooheys, or xxxx or Carlton, but these are really poor substitutes for BEER :D:o

Gee, thanks for the help guys. :o Am I the only falang who drinks Mekhong? I like Chang beer too and occasionaly a bottle of Leo to rinse out the mouth. Tastes a bit like VB (visitors beer). I won't stoop to drinking Yaa Dong, I tried it once when we had ran out of everything

else. :D I reckon you could run the mower on it. Still, Yaa and Yai both have one every day and they look about 90 years old. Medicinal purposes only of course. I guess I'll have to stick to Bundy for the next couple of months. ooroo กระดิ่ง

How about some of that Chinese white spirit that not only smells bad, it also taste bad and gives ya an incredibally bad hangover.

But it makes you drunk quickly, ha ha ha!

:o

Gosh, Mekhong wikkie, how on earth can you drink that.

Byoung2: You should be able to track down some 'Wilsons'. It's kiwi whisky and tastes dam_n near as bad as Mekhong :D

Don't knock Wilsons.

When my dad was alive and 'suffering Melbs weather', I always bought a bottle or two, over for him.

Depending how many of us were visiting.

He decanted it into a Chevas Regal bottle and shouted his Ockor mates who thought the 'Chevas' was great stuff.

SO MUCH FOR OCKOR TASTES IN WHISKY.

I must agree with the above, even if XXXX and Tooheys are Kiwi owned, I guess standards have to be dropped to take into account local beer tastes, as per whisky.

No, Adelaide. But I'll suss out some of the bigger retailers and see what I can find. By the many arms of Vishnu!! :o $30 a bottle is a bit rich when you can get it at 'Lotut' for $6. It might be better to give the liver a rest for a while.

For local-Thai Mekong has long since gone down the river and has been replaced with Santip.

Many years ago I heard of a story about a Canadian guy who, like you, was impressed with Mekong and thought about actually importing it into Canada (steady supply!) he apparently sent a sample to the FDA .... the results concluded that the stuff had high levels of lead and was "not fit for human consumption" ! :o

On another note: I have enjoying making Yaa Dong with Bacardi's light rum - this makes for a great drink, especially if you are partial to rum & coke.

We could all use a little extra lead in the pencil :o

Very surprised you have any ocker mates Pete. :D

Have you heard the latest? They're going to merge the migration zone between Oz and N. Zuland.

Just one more step before the clouded isles officially become the states of South Tasmania and Lower South Tasmania.

Yeah, that is worrying.

OK with many kiwis going to OZ.

Trubl is Ockors coming to Aotearoa, lowering the average IQ in the Shakey Isles.

(Note: NZ was once governed by NSW.)

No, they're not likely to have any Tasmanian reference to NZ - kiwis could never handle having to grow the second head (unless, of course, they start to drink Mekhong).

Second head?

Ya talking wakky bakky heads?

New Zealand Green, beats Ockor Brown, hands down, bigger heads than OZ weed.

Funny that, as Ockors appear to have big hats for their big heads......not talikng bakky hehehe

Certainly not. It amazes me that people still do illicit drugs despite knowing what they can do to them. But this is

A good substute could be isopropyl alcohol, meths and fanta, many brown paper baggers drink that mix.

I knew two, both dead now.
