Hello Thai visa forum members :o

My first post, and my apologies for my gluttony for information few mins after sign up .

i have browsed the forum with no result, so, if i may, ask a brain twister regarding work in thailand.

if i run a web design/webmastering buisness in the uk, and i operate this, from my apartment in thailand, to people abroad and pay tax to the uk, i am thinking of starting up a web buisness before i leave for thailand.

i have read the rules of residence, and work permits, and jobs farrangs must not do, but this means of income

is not listed. as i am not catering for thailand,

i will look further into this soon at an official point of information. but in the meantime, does anyone have any thoughts on this?.

or does anyone communicate back home from thailand and engage safley in work in the UK without breaking any rules?

thanks for you kind attention.

muppy.

It doesn't matter where the income comes in ... you're working in the Kingdom, so you'll need a WP.

That said, I guess many people do this kind of work in Thailand 'under the radar'.

covered a multitude of times, but to briefly recap :

to be legal, you need a work permit to physically perform work in thailand.

but many people who run or work on websites(hosted abroad) from thailand find this too inconvenient and impractical and therefore choose to "fly under the radar".

thanks for that :o , i fully understand now, however, " the radar" might not be good to my nevous system, but i greatly

appriciate the input on the scene.

ps, i was in the kingdom recently, and the UK seems completely irrelevant to me now. the effect of visiting the kingdom has

changed me, i think for the rest of my life..

You can have a work permit as a webmaster.

My latest work permit has been on this basis for over two years now (albeit to encourage foreigners to visit Thailand).

Thats actually very interesting, so suppose it now proves that the statements by some posters on TV that they dont need, the law in Thailand doesnt cater for them, its a grey area etc are all wrong then ???

You can work as a webmater no question about that.

It's how he got the work permit that needs to be answered.

Working for a company? Or forming and working for his own company?

For people working in a remote internet type of capacity from thailand(webmasters etc...), the only real legal way I can see to skirt the law would be to live in Phuket, own a nice boat with a satellite internet connection and cruise into international waters( 12 nautical miles offshore ? ) whenever you wanted to "work" on your website, immigration issues might be interesting, lots of marine border crossings...haha :o

And the answer is:

By forming and working for my own company

This is a very interesting topic for me. I have a couple of ways I may be earning additional money when I retire next March to Thailand.

1. Continuing to work at home on an email basis to my current company as a contract employee with money directly deposited to my bank in the USA.

This topic has been addressed here but leads me to ask these:

a. Is the non O-A the way for me to go (this was my first choice as I am not definately yet gainfully employed in that capacity).

b. Is this and easy permit to get (seeing I am not taking work away from a Thai citizen).

2. Selling photographic images online.

This seems to be one of those murky areas as I am uploading images to a site(s) and sale of images is sent to my account abroad.

c. Any thoughts or comments?

I believe you have all the answers already in this thread. For the type of work you describe you have two choices: set up a company and get a work permit, or work under the radar.

I could think of a third possibility: don't work. Don't use the w-word. You browse the Internet, call and email friends and acquaintances, update your blog or website to let the world know what's happening in your life, play games or otherwise fiddle with your computer, but for everything you do you never use the w-word. Never mind that some kind people pay some money into your bank account in some far-away country. That's not your problem. You are not working, that's all that matters. Get the drift?

first set up a company in the UK, get some steady, well paying clients, and not 2 or 3 but 20 or 30 (will take you a year or two).

because you have poor nerves you have to open your own company in thailand (work permit from a thai employer might be withdrawn, so it's a risk for you).

when you cool down from your recent visit to thailand (I would think the first one), think again about living and working in a second world country.

whatever you do, take your time, because you are making very important decisions
