Retirement Visa-import Duty

Recommended Posts

I am going to apply for a retirement visa next month and intend to ship in my personal stuff from Europe.

Do I have to pay import duties on these things as if they were new items or can I bring them in free if I have a valid retirement visa?

You can expect to pay duties. A shipping agent will be able to negotiate a good fee for you.

Note that items less then 6 months old are considered new.

I just brought in a 20' container this week and had to pay $970USD in total for Customs. This was done through Asian Tigers Transpo. They are highly reputable and there were no issues with Customs at all. I have furniture, electronics, clothing, etc. Normal household goods. Just don't try to bring in alcohol or vehicles, the import duties are extremely high!

I used Asian Tigers also about 5 years ago going into retirement in Thailand.

Very professional and helpful.

In my case my (Thai) wife used her, free of import tax status,as a returning Thai.

So... a forty feet container free of import duties :o

$970 seems a lot of tax. Reading the link from Mario2008 I assumed household goods were tax free.

Maybe it's cheaper do dump my stuff in Europe and but all new stuff here.

Important papers and documents could be sent tax free by DHL anyway.
