This is not a 'degrees of separation' question. How many people (of any race, gender, or nationality) that you are sure you have personally either met or encountered within a distance of 3 meters or less have been murdered in Thailand?

I know or was acquainted with 5 people whom I believe were murdered. I listed 3 because 2 of them were ruled as....you guessed it...suicide. Of course, I've been here a while.

I've been here twenty years and off the top of my head can think of 8 or so. Could be more.

Blimey, who voted 8?!

Zero for me in 4 years of living here. Though I did hear about a vague acquaintance's husband who was shot in the head in Koh Pha Ngan. But then we really are talking about "degrees of separation"...!

I do know 2 people in jail for committing murder though, one of whom used to live in Thailand. Though he committed his crime outside of the Kingdom.

Edit: Looks like SBK just answered my first question then!!!

You knew 8 people that were murdered???Is that because of your business(Tourism)?

Just to answer for myself- it was only one; I never formally met him but we used to hang out in the same club and knew each other by sight- basically the only foreigners in the place so we would nod at each other. The reason for his death was never determined (or at least never publicised), but after reading the press reports I think it was probably drug related.

Now you know why SBK is such a tough mod... :o

I voted one. One Falang and one Thai but not sure he was murdered they never found a body. He just never returned home to his wife and child after leaving his home near Pai and coming to Chiang Mai. Pretty sure he was murdered but who knows. aloha

I don't know any personally but I do know a number who were killed on motorcycles.

And I thought they were just banned :o

Moss :D

No farang murders that I know of.

A bar boy did stick a knife in my back, many years ago.

Attempted murder, not that the police even tried to catch him. :o

I was in hospital, with a chest tube for one week.

The only one I can think of is a Thai policeman I knew who was shot by his jealous wife.

Somebody took a couple of shots at me once but luckily all they managed to do was put some holes in my car. I still don't know what that was all about.

No, I am not knocking people off :o

Although it is tempting sometimes :D

No, the murders had nothing to do with tourism either. A few were business related, a few were drunken rage-fuelled arguments and quite a few were men messing around with married women. All among locals. I have a very very wide local acquaintance, probably more than most foreigners living in Thailand --mainly due to my husband's extremely large extended family. (41 first cousins! :D )

Does my mate 'murdered' by One2Die count? (RIP Colin :o )

Had to think about that one for a moment...No,it doesn't count,but a bloody tragedy,all the same. :D

No offence SBK but you are the one that tries to portray Thailand in a "safe" light, you must come from a warzone country to think that knowing 8 people that have been murdered is safe... I have never known anyone to be murdered back home. Here I know all kinds of horrible things about and that happen to people I know.

There are 5 respondents that know of 50 people or more. :o

The usual jokers, no doubt. Unless someone seriously justifies a response like that, I think we can read that choice as being "I don't take your poll seriously!"

They should be taken out and shot.

Total 3

1, Thai neighbor killed in a robbery by 2 drug addicts, the local police took no interest in the case, and his wife pursued the matter at police HQ in BKK to get justice.

2, falang business man murdered in a business dispute.

3, falang involved in some illegal activity murdered by associates.

I also know one Thai guy who has killed at least 3 people and was acquitted by the courts.

In Kabinburi there is a shooting (more often than not, not fatal) every second week. The amount of guns (both real, and homemade ones) around town is unbelievable. Just about every business has a gun near their cash register. Even the teenage motorbike gangs usually carry a pen gun or two amongst their numbers.

Out of all the fatalities, I have probably interacted with more than 10 - 15, however, none would even rate as aquaintences.

Just one, a young guy I knew a few years back was (unknown to him) dating someone's mia noi. Walked out of his house one night and was hit in the back of the head by a steel pole, then curb stomped.

Used to have a bar/restaurant business in Phuket back in the early 90's,one of my regular customers whom I knew well was murdered.

I only found out some months after it happened as all the gory details appeared in one of those Thai crime magazines that my girlfriend at the time used to love reading.

I'd since moved up to C Rai so if I hadn't come across the story in the out dated publication then I would never had known.
