Hello,

I will be studying in Thailand on a one year student visa. I am a 34 year old from the States.

I was wondering if anyone could tell me where I might be able to get a multi entry student visa that would not require me to leave during the year? I am in Thailand now and would like to go somewhere close if possible. If not, I am game to do this one run further away to not have to worry about it every three months.

Where is the best place to get the ED visa done?

Thanks in advance.

A single entry is enough. With papers from the school you then should be able to get an extension of stay from immigration, without the need to leave the country. You probably will have to report to immigration every 90 days in person. Ask your school for help, they should know what to do.

Mario2008 gave you correct information; you need only a SINGLE entry visa to the glorious "Land 'O Thais" or in 'engrish': a 90 day single entry Non-Immigrant Type-ED visa. The school will provide you with paperwork to extend the visa every 90 days after that. Evidently, that can be done for several years.

In my experience (after seeing all too many people come to the thai language school I used to attend (which shall remain nameless as they are a sponsor of this site); ONCE you get an extension on your "multi entry Non-O-Type-ED visa" here it is CANCELED. That visa is finished and cannot be used for the rest of the year without getting an extension every 90 days.

There is no way around this, and once you use the 90 day extension route with supporting documents (usually the paperwork is provided for free from the school) at the cost of 1900 baht at Suan Plu (Thai Immigrations in Bangkok) your visa is now only for 90 days at a time.

IF you have a multi-entry Non-O-Type-ED visa from outside this country (like Hull in the UK, or any of the Honorary Consulates in the US), you should do border runs every 90 days to keep it "alive". Although the cost to use a "visa run" service is about 2000 baht, last time I checked. Of course; you can do it MUCH cheaper by yourself), but that is what the visa companies charge to take you to the Cambodian border and back. ..

For most people it's really a 'wash'; either you do border runs every 90 days or go to Suan Plu and apply for another 90 day extension for 1900 baht. .. ...

About the only advantage is; IF you have a "Multi Entry Non-Immigrant type O-ED visa" from the US and you "run for the border" just before your visa expires, you get an additional 90 days. If only for the fact that that type of visa is good for a 90 day entry. Coming back into thailand on the day your visa expires will give you another 90 days (did it already last year). In reality you could get 15 months out of a one year Multi-Entry Non-Immigrant-O Type ED visa.

Hope it's not too confusing, but send me a P/M if you have questions...

I'm also looking into the one year ED visa. Everything mentioned on this thread has been very helpful. I thank the OP and all the responses to his post. I am still confused on a couple of things.

1) The difference between a multiple-entry/ exit (3,800 baht) and the single-entry/ exit (1,000 baht) options. What are the exit requirements for each?

My understanding from this and previous posts is the following:

If you opt for the multiple-entry/ exit choice for the one year ED visa you will be allowed to leave Thailand and return as many times as you like. You are, however required to leave the country every 90 days (simply cross the border and return without going to an embassy/ consulate). Are there any fees associated with the return at the border? I'm assuming that would be the time you have to pay for the next 90 days (i.e. the 1,900 baht).

If you select the single-entry/ exit option you can only exit Thailand/ return once. The advantage to this is you won't be required to exit Thailand to renew the next 90 days (simply go to the local immigration office and pay the 1,900 baht fee).

Am I completely confused about the differences between the two?

2) Are you required to pay for the entries when you get your ED visa? In other words, if I go to Vientiane to get my ED visa do I have to tell them then and there whether I want the multiple or single entry option? Can I choose my entry option at another time by going to a local immigration office?

3) (This is slightly related to question 2.) If I only plan on leaving Thailand twice within the next year can I just get the single-entry/ exit stamp for each trip? This seems to be more cost effective as I would only have to pay $2,000 baht vs. $3,800 baht.

4) What is the initial cost for the ED visa?

5) Are you able to work part-time on an ED visa? I'm pretty sure it's a matter of don't ask don't tell, but I want to know if having an ED visa seriously prohibits you from obtaining part-time work. (I'd primarily be looking for part-time work as an English teacher.)

Thanks for your help.
