The Ministry of Culture eyes the ancient beads site in Krabi and pushes for a local museum to be established.

The Ministry of Culture plans to hold a seminar on ancient beads in Bangkok while the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry Veera Rojpojajanarat will visit the area of Koh Kor Khao in Thakuapa and Klong Thome district in Krabi. This followed the discovery of ancient beads and ancient objects made from rocks, mosaic and gold in 5 southern provinces of Chumporn, Ranong, Surat Thani, Phang-Nga and Krabi with the most recent discovery of colorful ancient beads in Krabi’s Klong Thom district. The ministry is also looking into a possibility to establish local museums to exhibit ancient beads, accessories, jewelry and lifestyle for new generations to learn about the objects. On the local side, Krabi Governor Siwa Sirisaowalak plans to carry out a project to trace the history of ancient beads. The session will be organized during March 9-13 when beads experts and interested parties will gather and share their experiences and ideas. Mr. Siwa stressed that the beads at Klong Thom were found since 1960, but no serious traces were carried out. He points out that they may have been part of an historical and important civilization for southern Thailand.

item--7--- The Lanta Festival in Krabi will be held during 7-9 March.

The annual event ‘Laantar Lanta festival’ is scheduled to be held during March 7-9th at the old town community of the Lanta Municipality on Lanta island. The organizers which comprise Lanta District chief Pirom Merungruang, Krabi Tourist Association, the Lanta Municipality and TAT Krabi office expects the festival to boost tourism as well as promote unique cultures of local residents. Being an island which earns district status in Krabi, the Lanta Island houses cultural diversity including unique Sea Gypsies under the Ulak Lawoi tribe. This year’s activities highlight local folklore and culture and tradition, local sports, sea gypsy boat ceremony, cultural performances, local food and products plus many more. TAT in Krabi invites residents and tourists to visit and enjoy the festival. Lanta Island can be accessed by boat from Phuket, Krabi and Phang-Nga.

Krabi is requesting over 500 million baht for local development in the next government fiscal year of 2010.

Krabi provincial authority is requesting a central budget of over 500 million baht for local development to serve peoples’ needs. This request, which has passed the provincial committee and people’s representatives’ participation, seeks support for the fiscal budget year of 2010. As for the province itself, Krabi is seeking over 430 million baht fund for 3 strategic development plans. They are serving the tourism and health destination plan at 159 million baht, sustainable agriculture and industry plan at 106 million baht and quality of life in transparent management at 165 million baht. As for the budget sought under the cluster development, Krabi propose a funding of 56 million baht to carry out 9 projects. The requests will be screened by a central committee before being presented for approval.

The Krabi Governor ordered strict security for Klongthom Bead Museum and prepares to improve the museum to cater for historical tourism.

Krabi Governor Siwa Sirisaowalak said he has ordered intensified security measures at a bead museum in Klongthom district of Krabi, after an ancient bead was stolen while on display at the National Discovery Museum Institute in Bangkok. The bead was from Klongthom district of Krabi where the local bead museum is located. However the thief was reported to have returned the priceless bead by post just yesterday. Mr. Siwa said special guard shifts have been put on strict duty at the local museum as it houses beads valuable to history. The provincial authority also plans to allocate 10 million baht budget to improve the museum and landscape to promote historical tourism.

A seminar about ‘ancient beads: opportunity for Krabi historical tourism’ was held.

Historians and people who are interested in history attended a seminar titled ‘‘ancient beads: opportunity to develop Klongthom into historical and civilization tourist destination’. The seminar followed the recent accidental discovery of a large location of ancient beads and objects in Klongthom district and other locations in Krabi. One of the ancient beads, which were displayed in a museum in Bangkok, was stolen and later returned by post, but attracted interest in the ancient beads by members of the public. The seminar, chaired by the Krabi Vice Governor Chailert Pinyoratanachote, agreed that people should be educated and realize their historical value and that historical tourism can be developed. The Krabi Governor Siwa Sirisaowaluck earlier told Andaman News that he has ordered strict security for the museum in Klongthom and has allocated 10 million baht budget to improve the museum plus landscaping.

Minister of Culture supports the improvement of bead museum in Krabi and suggests that the authority urge public participation.

The Minister of Culture, Mr. Teera Salakpetch, on Saturday visited a bead museum in Klongthom district of Krabi. The museum accommodates and displays ancient objects including beads, some over 2,000 years old. Mr. Teera praised the provincial authority which joined hands with the local government in Klongthom to set aside 10 million baht to improve the museum. He suggests that the organization invite residents to participate and build trust in them. In doing so, he believes that the residents will contribute or donate beads they may have in their possession to the museum for new generations to learn about. He stressed that the ministry will support the museum by assigning officials from the Fine Arts Department to assist in the improvement, lay out or arrangement of ancient beads display. He stressed that he would discuss with responsible organizations to ensure the same direction of development to make it sustainable.

item--6--- Department of Fisheries announced Phang-Nga Bay fishing ban during egg laying season from April 1st till June 30th this year.

The Department of Fisheries has officially announced the 3 month period closure of fishing for this year, starting April 1st to the end of June. The Department’s Director General Dr. Somying Piumsomboon presided over the announcement ceremony at the Tara public park in Krabi town. These three months are the egg laying period for marine lives. The fishing closure will cover from the Panwa Cape in Phuket through the east side of Hua Lan Cape in Koh Yao district of Phang-Nga, Koh Pida Nok, Lanta Yai, ThaliBon island, and Yong Star of Palien district in Trang province, totaling 4,696 square kilometers. The official warned fishermen to sustain the fishing in the areas by following the rules. Violators will face a fine of 5,000 – 10,000 baht or a maximum of 1 year imprisonment or both. Fishing tools will also be confiscated if found guilty.

Krabi is designated one of four provinces in Thailand to develop commercial areas under the Ministry of Commerce ‘walking street’ concept of ‘Mostly by Thais’.

Krabi, Chantha Buri, Taak and Chachoensao are selected as locations to develop commercial arcades by the Ministry of Commerce. Vice Minister of Commerce Weerasak Jinarat last Friday presided over a ceremony at the Maharat Road soi 8 in Krabi town to officially open the commercial area designated as a ‘pedestrian lane’ to attract shoppers. This road used to be busy 10 years ago, but was getting quieter in the past few years. The project is supported by the Krabi Chamber of Commerce, Krabi Municipality and the provincial authority. Over 200 shops are participating in the project; 66 of them restaurants, 39 sell handmade handicrafts, 18 are giftshops, 11 OTOP stalls, and 3 traditional Thai massage. Others comprise education, blue flags or economical goods / suppliers and environmentally friendly products shops. The shops under this project presented themselves under the concept called ‘mostly by Thais’. It attracted good interest from residents and tourists.
