A couple of months ago I asked about teeth whitening but to try and convince me one way or another, I want to know what actually goes on and what damage is done etc.

I want to use real life examples if I may.

If I bleach clothes, they become weaker. That is a fact. They will tear and shred much earlier. Not a nice thing to happen to teeth :o

If I use an abrasive on a shiny surface, such as a brillo pad on plastic then you will forever see the scratches. You get it clean, but you have permanently damaged it. It will lso get dirtier more quickly due to increased surface area.

I think you get the message.

So, is the stain inside or on the outside ?

What about the enamel and the way it protects the tooth ?

Can you see what I am getting at ? I want to know where the stain is and how it is removed and what are the repercussions.

I can't see me putting something in my mouth when I sleep so it is likely the dentist's chair if I go ahead.

Thanks

first dentist (some 800baht) and than whitening toothpaste from time to time, as a maintanance.

I use to use one, strong, good working, which was causing lining of my mouth to peal. Probably should not be used constantly, for years.

That's an awful side-effect! Could you hear the ringing all the time or only when you opened your mouth? ( :o )

Supposedly, the stains are in cracks in the teeth which is why they don't just brush away or go away with a polishing. The whitening stuff bleaches the stains in the cracks. Does it harm the enamel? Maybe, but think of all the things the teeth are subjected to. Hard foods, carbonated drinks, acidic things, bacterial attack. Toothpaste actually has a mild abrasive in it. If your teeth are otherwise healthy, shouldn't be a problem.
