Hi guys,

Could anybody recommend a (private) health insurance company in Thailand which offers adequate cover for families and is affordable?

Thanks for your help…

Certainly - as a Thai Visa member why not use the proven services of your own 'in house' Broker, Thai Visa Insurance, and ask for their recommendations ? http://insurance.thaivisa.com/quote-form

I've had a policy for our family for two years with "Thai Health Insurance" and for past two years now with "BUPA". I suggest you go to the web sites of both major Insurance firms and print out policy coverage levels and prices for your family (age and sex matters). Both web sites are in Thai and ENGLISH. For the first year we had "out patient" coverage against the advise of our Phuket based insurance broker. He was correct, it did not "pencil out". Working with a independent broker who speaks your native language and is a person who is of that same native language has many advantages and costs you no additional money. Dealing DIRECT with an insurance company in Thailand can be a "challenge" at best, but you won't save any money on the policy costs. CRUCIAL to see if the private hospital convenient for your family is in the "network" of the company you are considering. Look at the policy coverage levels and consider the hospital costs. Having the phone number of YOUR agent to consult before making a hospital admission is a plus from our experience at Bumrungrad. Discounts for JOINING at the same time as a family and DISCOUNTS for renewal did not take any "bargaining".

Bupa Thailand has some excellent cover for a great price and if you visit the office you can bargain them down a little bit especially if u take 2 policies for the mrs at the same time etc.

Whoops! Misinformation here. Bupa does have some very good cover. But, there is more disadvantage than advantange to your dealing directly with the insurer (I am sure Thaivisa will vouch for that). You don't bargain with Bupa over premium. They give a 10% family discount when two or more in the same family enroll together. If you renew and have had no claims the past year, you will receive a rebate check 6 months later. You get this whether you deal direct or deal through a broker. Your cost for the insurance is the same either way. A good broker is your representative in dealing with the insurance companies, and the service is free to you.
