When they secretly come to surview 4.6 sq. km of disputed land Thailand has all the rights to ask questions about their involvement.

"the presence of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) officials at Preah Vihear Temple". No one mention that UNESCO went to the disputed area. Get it!

PM admits UNESCO traveled to observe Preah Vihear without notifying Thailand

BANGKOK, 14 May 2009 (NNT) - The Ministry of Defense and relevant security agencies have been instructed by the Prime Minister to investigate the presence of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) officials at Preah Vihear Temple near the Thai-Cambodian border...

What a laugh. Why should UNESCO inform Thai government when they go to visit a Cambodian Temple. It has got nothing to do with Thailand. Get it!

Mark, don't you have better things to do than peeping at your neighbour's wife?

UPDATE:

FM calls on Unesco to act transparently on temple

Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya yesterday called on Unesco to act transparently when deciding what it would do with the area near the Preah Vihear temple.

His comments came after reports that Unesco officials had inspected parts of the 4.6 square kilometres of disputed land near the World Heritage site.

As an organisation which responds to the need of its members, Unesco should carry out its activities with transparency and respect Thai sovereignty, he said.

The Foreign Ministry would send official letters to the Unesco headquarters in France and its two offices in Bangkok and Phnom Penh.

In March, the Foreign Ministry sent a letter to Unesco to inform the organisation that it should seek permission from the Thai government if it wishes to conduct any activities in the area surrounding the temple. The World Heritage Committee's approval of Cambodia's proposed listing of Preah Vihear covers only the temple, not the surrounding area, the ministry said.

Army chief Gen Anupong Paojinda said yesterday Unesco officials must ask Thailand for permission if they were to enter the territory claimed by both countries.

He said the army has asked the Foreign Ministry to make sure that both Cambodia and Unesco strictly follow the agreements.

"It would be unacceptable if Unesco staff entered the overlapping territory claimed by Thailand," said Gen Anupong.

You jumped the gun.

From the BP article above:

"reports that Unesco officials had inspected parts of the 4.6 square kilometres of disputed land near the World Heritage site"

In the original news story the same allegation was in Abhisit's reaction.

Just buy a couple of nuke from the former USSR republics. Fire one at the temple and that should solve all the border problems. It should also clear up all the land mins in the area too. The sceond one to be used as spare, in case Hun Sen try something funny.

This is without a doubt one of the dumbest violent political flare-ups going on in the world today. On the other hand, I suppose it's a good indication that at least neither of these countries has the wherewithal to undertake a major fiasco the likes of which we've got on our hands in The States, heh.

Thailand to protest UNESCO over Preah Vihear inspection

BANGKOK, May 20 (TNA) – Thailand will submit a protest letter to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) on Thursday after the UN agency’s staff inspected the overlapping zone adjacent to Preah Vihear temple without prior notification to Thailand.

Virachai Plasai, Director-General of the Department of Treaties and Legal Affairs, said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will invite a UNESCO representative to receive the protest letter Thursday morning at the ministry.

He added that Thai Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya had earlier instructed the ministry to convey this concern over the issue to UNESCO headquarters in Paris, and its offices in Bangkok and Phnom Penh.

The disputed area, adjacent to the ancient temple, has long been a source of tension between Thailand and Cambodia.

An international court awarded Preah Vihear temple to Cambodia in 1962, but a 4.6-square km (1.9-square mile) parcel of land surrounding it remains the subject of territorial claims by the two neighbouring countries. (TNA)

Thailand recongises the existence of overlapping claims, Cambodia treat this land as its own already, and that's the source of the tensions.

Army Chief affirms Thai-Cambodian border situation under control

BANGKOK, 22 May 2009 (NNT) – Army Commander-in-Chief General Anupong Paochinda confirmed that the current situation along the Thai-Cambodian border had been under control with no sign of tension between the two sides.

Prior to his visit to the operation base of the 2nd Army Area Command and Suranaree Task Force, General Anupong asserted that the current Thai-Cambodian border situation had been maintained under control, stressing that the overall atmosphere between the two neighboring nations was still peaceful and negotiable.

In terms of the 3 southern border provinces, the Army Chief announced that he would be traveling to the area in the near future. He insisted that violent means would not be adopted to suppress the southern insurgency, but political and development measures would instead be sought to help tackle the ongoing problem in the area. He said that public members would be given information and clarification on the matter in order to create a good understanding between them and the military as well as to deter the locals from joining the insurgent force.

Your 3 points should be published nation-wide for the sake of the truth of the land.

Yes, what left of PPP also very actively, willingly and gladly participated in the election of the PM that turned out to be their defeat.

Only then they declared the process undemocratic.

Thailand warns Unesco over visit to Preah Vihear Temple

Published on May 21, 2009

Thai Foreign Ministry on Thursday warned UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) that its officials and experts could visit disputed border area near Preah Vihear Temple only with the permission from Thai authority.

The warning was conveyed during a meeting between the ministry's Treaties and Legal Affairs director general Virachai Plasai and Unesco's chief of Information and Knowledge Management Unit Clive Wing.

The meeting on Thursday came as experts from International Councils on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) entered the area early April but Unesco's Assistant Director General for Culture Francoise Riviere informed Thai embassy in Paris about the mission on April 17.

The group of experts landed by a helicopter at the cliff from Cambodia site and entered to the building through the stair channel, according to a press statement issued after the meeting.

The group spent two hours there, it said.

Virachai said Thursday the ministry has informed the Unesco in March that only the main building of the Preah Vihear temple was inscribed as the Unesco World Heritage site.

The wider promontory, cliff and cave are not included so that the Unesco could not pass through these areas without Thai permission.

The Preah Vihear, ruled by the International Court of Justice in 1962, belongs to Cambodia but Thailand claimed its vicinity is under Thai sovereignty.

Unesco's Wing said Thursday the Unesco has been aware of the Thai concern and would be very careful about the conduct.

However he said the Unesco's Bangkok office has no detail about the work of the experts in April since the work is under coordination of office in Paris and Phnom Penh.

To you, I must be the arm dealer for the break away CIS, current based in Pattaya with the Mafia?

If not for the money, I rather be in Central Asian steppe riding and hunting with my favorite golden eagle.
