I find it amazing that some contributors here wish to condemn him and his cause of free speech yet wish to engage in free speech themselves online here! ...

I don't find it amazing at all. Stick around mate, you'll love it here! :o

I am sorry what are you smoking ??, this is a moderated forum, there is no truly free speech here, unless it agrees with the rules as set out and the interpretation of those rules by the people who can ban you or delete your posts.

If you want free speech I suggest you get a box and set it up in Hyde park.

I would deinitely NOT accuse Thai justice system. It's what it is, it's part of the country, take it or leave it.

I believe that Giles is two steps ahead of you, Plus! :D

Well, I'm not in a hurry to catch up.

Of course you wouldnt Plus, nor would any other sane person here, why??, because there are laws here that say if you accuse the justice system then you go to jail.

That is why the Thai justice system is totally impartial and free of corruption :o:D

Running away to avoid presenting his case and accuse everyone else from distance? True coward.

Or, perhaps, he realised that there's no substance whatsoever in his allegations and so they are indefensible in court.

I've watched most his speeches on Utube & he appears to be a genuine patriot who wants the best for the poor and a fairer society. He would be certain to receive a punative prison sentence should he return; so a coward, cerainly not.

As for defending himself in Thailand's court's; only a fool would come to the conclusion that he would receive a fair trial.

Do you really believe what you write ?

If yes, I feel sorry for you.

Compulsive mental delusion is a serious medical condition. Seek professional help .

Maybe the PAD infiltration is worse than I thought. Brainwashed into thinking this country has a fair judicial system and a legitimate government I bet!

20 years seems unlikely,

but they guy HAS been pushing peoples buttons for some time.

Bound to get a overt reaction sooner or later.

He has had his dual nationality as an escape valve,

and I guess he just thought to go for it.

Personally I thought he could have been more effective

staying here and not going over the top and needing to split.

But he's made his bed now.

Only 10 if he pleads guilty!

What do you expect from a country who is ranked 124 on 173 in the Worldwide press freedom index?

Look again....Thailand #59, Israel by comparison #115, Singapore # 147

I don't know how countries such as Germany and Canada rate so hi (#11 and #18), where many people have gone to jail over the past view years, for voicing their opinions and beliefs (not saying those beliefs where right, but that is not the issue, the people had a right to free speech)

As for Thailand, I feel a balance is necessary...Freedom of Speech, within the boundries of Respect. Respect may be an outdated value to some of you, but, even though I don't practice it often enough, I feel that it is necessary, for good, positive human interaction.

I don't believe that laws should be used to silence opinions, but I do believe, that it they could serve their true purpose - reminding people to show respect to their head of state. After all, we are not animals.

Yep, show Mugabbe some reverence you ungracious Zimbabians.

You quoted the ranking from 2004. That was its high point, and shortly after under Thaksin that Thailand's ranking began to fall again, as he unleashed a relentless campaign to curtail criticism of himself and his government. Unfriendly reporters quickly found themselves faced with multi million dollar defamation lawsuits. Thailand in 2008 is ranked 124.

As for defending himself in Thailand's court's; only a fool would come to the conclusion that he would receive a fair trial.

The 2 earlier trials had all appearances of fairness.

He DID get convicted, and so a 'Punative' jail sentence he NO DOUBT will get,

because he WAS CONVICTED and that calls for punishment End of story.

They did let Potjamin off, and keep the land,

erring on the side of innocence, likely somewhat incorrectly.

But Thaksin DID 'allow' the wife to buy the land and clearly

KNEW that was against the rules for Pols.

And it clearly was a super sweetheart deal.

Fair play he got caught.

Here's what worries him.

Still he has several other suits in the processes

and HE knows what he did in the past.

Live by the sword die by the sword, maybe.

But he can't take his medicine. So coward would fit.

He's worried if he does those 2 short years,

he can't avoid the other court dates pending

and those will be MUCH longer sentences.

Just because you are bound to lose based on your own actions

vis a vis the laws of the time of said actions,

doesn't mean you automatically will get punished.

But if you KNOW you done it and proof can exist....

It also doesn't meant that a necessarily VERY public set of trials

won't be held in a very open and clear manner for INTERNATIONAL consumption.

They are worried about international appearances especially with Thaksin.

His logical convictions and a few aquitals will be quite clearly delineated for the above reasons.

He wants to avoid that and wants 'Blanket Amnesty' from ALL issues before he comes back,

because he KNOWS if the look clearly, without rose colored glasses,

they WILL find the skeletons in his closet.

Appearing to be a patriot is not the same as actually acting patriotically.

He is calling for insurection...

ooh that IS patriotic, 100 years after the revolution, but NOT before.

He might get a pardon after 3 years

Wasn't the thread about G Ungpakorn? You PAD guy's never miss a chance to slag off Thaksin. When will you understand that the old elite cannot rule by subjugation forever and if the country is not returned to a truly democratically elected government soon, then civil unreast will continue to escalate.

As for patriot's; it is every officer's sworn duty to serve the democratically elected government and every judges obligation to administer the law impartially and without bias. Some hope; every time the administration tries to impliment social reform's there's another army coup and the ruling party is desolved by the judiciary!

The LM law with a 20 year jail term is draconian and medieval, it allows widespread misuse and there is no transparancy whatsoever. Who in there right mind would come back to face such a sentance.

I'm sure that the Junta would hit Thaksin with LM if he were to come back.
