I am so convinced by your statements. Reds, hanging portraits of Thaksin over their necks, queuing up to get their Bt500 from Thaksin, parking LPG tanker in a residential area, using force to take over a market and gunned down a few of its occupants, burnt down shops and homes of a muslim community,. All these action was a fight for rights and justice? Who was your foe in the fight? Who was the leader of your battle? The one in the portrait over your neck?

they knew he would be PM, because Thaksin essentially directed it.

They voted for individual PPP MP's.

Samak was removed due to his own arrogance and ignorance.

You make a very good point and one I have been thinking about as well.

many people like to say that Abhisit is a "puppet" of the PAD, which I doon't think is the case at all. While it's true to say he could not be prime minister without their backing, it is also true to say he could not be prime minister without the backing of Newin's faction.

In truth, almost all laws enacted and proposals made since Abhisit came to power have been for the benefit of the poor and have not gone down particularly well with the "elite". He has implemented the 15 year free education program, which no government of either stripe had done. He has proposed new taxes on property and inheritance to fund programs that would create a more egalitarian society. No wonder Thaksin had to make a move. Abhisit was cutting him off at the knees with REAL policies that could affect REAL change.

The red shirts were likely to regroup after the government lifts the state of emergency, sources from security forces said yesterday.

Although life in Bangkok appears to have returned to normal, intelligence officials have had tips that supporters of ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra plan more rallies as soon as the state of emergency is discarded.

Red-shirt leaders such as Jatuporn Promphan, Jakrapob Penkair had earlier announced they were ready to stage an underground movement.

Informants claim the new round of rallies were intended to be more dramatic than those that took place in recent days.

The government has been warned to check D-Station carefully and take legal action against taxi drivers' local radio stations as they were a media allegedly instigating an uprising and anarchy.

Pheu Thai Party Udon Thani MP Lt Col Surathin Pimanmekin said the red shirt movement would continue although they had been told by the leaders to suspend the protest. "People who are treated unfairly still want to demonstrate their protest in their own way. They do not need leaders. Having leaders does not necessarily ensure victory."

He said provincial people would come to Bangkok to issue demands to the government.

Democrat Party adviser Banyat Bantadtan believed the red shirt movement would revive after regrouping to try gather more strength.

However, he said the longer the rallies went on, the more public opposition the red shirts would face before finally dying down.

"Thaksin fears that it would reach that point and that's why he has been calling for a mediator to bring reconciliation,'' he said.

Banyat, formerly a Democrat Party leader, gave three reasons that would drive Thaksin to compromise: first he doesn't want to go to jail. The Supreme Court's Political Division for Political Office Holders had sentenced him to two years in prison over a land deal by his ex-wife.

Secondly, he did not want to lose his assets (courts are due to rule on $2 billion of family money that has been frozen in Thai banks). And third, he wanted to return to power.

Banyat said it would be hard to find people who would act as a mediator for Thaksin, as the former PM wanted the government to throw 13 graft cases, worth Bt200 billion in damages, out of the court.

"Thai society has developed to the point that people will not allow a few people to settle this problem because it goes against moral and legal grounds,'' he said.

Meanwhile, a former Roi Et MP for the pro-Thaksin People Power Party, Nisit Sinthuprai, claimed the riots this week were the work of a third party and not the red shirts.

He also claimed the military crackdown on the protesters on Monday led to deaths and that he would find evidence and relatives of people supposedly killed to present to the press.

He said the red shirts had not lost the war; they were just taking a recess. "We will actually steal a small victory by breeding red-shirt seeds in the heart of people. Once we blow the whistle, a bigger number of red shirts will turn up."

He said he would be a second-generation leader for the red shirts and would lead a rally to call for the resignation of three privy councillors and the PM."

There is, among a number of divides in the country, a geographical divide. The PAD are largely Bangkok-based people and thus unlikely to harm 'their' city. The Red Shirts are by and large, rural and have a lot less respect for the city and it's property. Many feel the Bangkokians use them and take advantage of them. This is a lot of the reasn for the damage (not all, by any stretch).

For some of them, they could just as well have been invading Burma or Cambodia.

They voted for PPP, it no longer exists, but it's MP's still do.

Koo, Im just glad you didn't join your friends in torching 20 buses, parking LPG gas trucks next to apartment buildings, and assaulting people at the market, etc... It seems you had enough sense to say "This is too crazy for me". Its nice to know that even passionate people can recognize extremism. Try using that common sense to recognize that Thaksin WANTED the red shits to use violence, to kill a few people, and cause lots of destruction. He was hoping your friends would do that, because he thought that more would join, and he could return to "lead the revolution". Thank God that most Thai's, if not highly educated, have a good amount of common sense, and could recognize his actions for what they were.

Thaksin has been doomed by history, and by his own greed. Its sad, but I hope that there are enough good people in public service (I think our PM and Finance Minister are good examples) can help Thailand move back to the right track.

Thailand has sunk so low, that its time to stop the call for "Fresh elections", charge the PAD, rise up Reds!, etc. How about PM who cares about the country, and wants to see it get better. How about a few years without riots, deaths, etc. How about some peace, so that Thai's can get back to being Thais (Sanook, mai pen rai, same same).

We see then a caretaker Government which can not handle but only sit unable to make decisions or install laws. In the best case scenario a fully function Government, election included will take at least 4-5 month to have it running. This can't be allowed. Solve the crisis first. Thailand needs a leader now and the current PM can do that - Yes, he can!!!

Do the Thai people want Chalerm to lead this country? Live with the fact that your hero turned into a zero... and will never return. You know, he is clever...

Peopeleof Bangkok, good point. This is what I don't understand here in Issan a lot of the money coming in here comes from relatives working Bangkok. For some at least they have a direct interest in what happens there beyond politics.

Udon also has a very strong yellow shirt group as well. If someone doesn't pause and think I see very bad results right around the corner. They haev already said hey haev o borrow more oney again now. If his doesn't stop the credit rating will go even lower then it already did. There most be a point of deminishing returns.

Rigth now every Thai is losing and there is no winner.

Please, it is getting tiring hearing comments like the "Democrats don't see the need to bring good things to people in general." Be specific. What about the Democrats policies for the people do you find fault with? Remember, the Democrats policies not only mirror what the PT has been offering, but their platform for the Dec. 2007 national election mirrored what the PPP was offering. Since the policies parallel each other, what is it about the PT and PPP's policies that you don't like?
