January 24, 200521 yr Thanks for that update. A lot depends on where the quake occurred. Quakes of this magnitude occur in Indonesia a lot more frequently than you imagine. The danger is when it is under the sea, like the 26th December, which seems to be a rarity. No mention on any of the news channels at 9am Thailand time.
January 24, 200521 yr Remember that the Richter scale is logarithmic. So, a 9.2 quake has an amplitude 1000 times as great as a 6.2. In terms of energy released, a 6.0 quake is about 30 times as powerful as a 5.0. So, this current quake pales in comparison with December 26th. Still, a 6.2 can cause significant damage, especially to poorly constructed buildings.
