I have heard the term "see-ow" used in many situations.

For example, my teeruk uses it when I touch certain parts of her body. :o

My hairdresser uses it when she's massaging my neck and I break out in goose bumps. :D

My caddy uses it when I hurl the golf cart around a corner too fast. :D

I have a general idea of the term's meaning(s) but would like some clarification.

Sorry, ain't my language either, but my sense is that the best word for that in my mind is 'pimples', assuming we're on the same page here. :o:D

But, the golf caddy example has thrown me off... :D

I thought it was a term for a physical reaction or sensation.

In the case of my teeruk, the sensation was a nice feeling of horniness. :o

For me it was just a pleasant physical sensation. :D

For the caddy, it was a feeling of fright. :D

Am I on the right track here?

เสียว

literally "thrill"

the thrill of fear, thrill of lust or to feel some sudden pain.

so your golf caddy felt fear, your barber got horny and you are hurting your girlfriend !! :o

Hahahahahahahaaaaa.... good one!

It didn't seem like it at the time... she wanted more!!! :D

However, I get your gist.

Where and when else can it be used in everyday situations?

It seems like a common phrase/word.

According to McFarland:

เสียว

v. to produce neuralgic pain; to cause a darting pain

According to Rajabandit (print version): รู้สึกแปบเพราะเจ็บ

Online Royal Thai Institue dictionary: รู้สึกแปลบ, เกิดอาการที่ทำให้ขนลุก, รู้สึกวาบในหัวใจด้วยความกำหนัด ความกลัว หรือความเจ็บ

(For those who don't read Thai, the Thai definitions imply stabbing/fleeting pain as well.)

However these definitions are obviously out of date/incomplete. In general usage the meaning has expanded to 'feel a thrill' -- whether it's the negative thrill of a dental drill, the negative/positive thrill of a speeding car or the positive thrill of a sexual maneuver.

That is my humble experience as well. I mostly hear it in the two-word compound หวาดเสียว which seems to indicate a somewhat scary, but nice experience, that feeling in your abdomen whenever you go very fast or when sexually excited.

I have never heard it used about genuinely unpleasant experiences in everyday speech.

according to the paiboon dictionary by Benjawan Poomsan Becker its:

siao เสียว feel a sudden pain, feel a thril of fear, feel a thrill of lust.

I understood it to be a sudden thrill, excitement or pain.

Mind you the first time I heard it in repitition it was Siaow-or, Siaow-or

So I went and had a shower, the next time she got a translator saying Mi -ow-lap-nam

You can imagine what an idiot I felt like :o

It is a good job I am not teaching you Thai.

"see-ow" sounds like "four shags" to me.

Maybe the เสียว "see-o" in น่าหวาดเสียว "naa waat see-o" which means thrilling. It can be used either positively or negatively ... :D

1.in a negative sense it means "frightful" ;and,

2.in a positive sense it means "awesome" or "formidable".

For example, my teeruk uses it when I touch certain parts of her body
Maybe เสี่ยว "see-o" with a "mai ek" tone mark which means "friend","pal" etc.(Isan).

In addition to "friend" it can also have completely different meanings like "pierce"and "attack".

เสี้ยว "see-o" with a "mai toh" tone mark means "a quarter".For example in the expression พระจันทร์เสี้ยว "pra-jahn see-o"=crescent moon.It can also mean "not straight".

My hairdresser uses it when she's massaging my neck and I break out in goose bumps.

Maybe สิว "se-o"="pimple" and similar things.(It can also mean other things)

Cheers, :D

เสียว is a very common word. The original meaning is the sensation of fear or erotic arousal. Thais usually use it as an exaggeration in many situations.

เสียวสันหลัง=Fear passed through my spine

เสียวตูด=I had a fear for my ass (ie. when a gay man checks out your behind, or when a car nearly clips you)

หวาดเสียว=Scary

เสียวโดนไล่ออก=Had a scare that I was going to be fired

เสียวจัง=Feels so nice (erotic)

เรื่องเสียวๆ=Erotic (or scary) anecdotes

อึ้ง ทึ่ง เสียว=Dumbfounding amazing thrilling

เีสียวฟัน=toothache

With different tones

เสี่ยว=Being a jackass

เสี้ยว=A sliver, a small part

I heard this once, "thang mot dtrong thao", or similar. I used to think it meant something like hair standing on end, goosebumps etc. I heard another explantation recently - something to do with ants, I am confused. it was a farang who gave me the 2nd explanation. I think it was "mot" as it all.

Can anyone clear this up?

Cheers

The closest I can think of is:

ทั้งหมดแถวตรง

Which is what sergeants use to tell their troop to stand in parade formation. Lit: All straight lines!

สิว=acne, zits
