My girlfriend is a nurse and for the last couple of years has been wanting to travel and earn some decent money. To cut a long story short she has ended up in Bahrain against all my advice and wishes. Today i got a sms from her telling me her passport has been taken by the agency and they are trying to force her to work as a prostitute.

I need some advice;

1. If she can get to the Thai embassy will they help her without a passport?

2 What would happen if she went to the police

Suggest you contact the regional IOM office in Cairo, they might be able to assist. FYI, Friday might just be a day off for them, not sure.

I can't get their "contact" button to work, you try it. They might be able to pass a message on to Cairo, or have other suggestions.

I assume she still has her Thai ID card or other documentation so contacting Thai embassy in Bahrain (if there is one) would be my first option. They should be able to assist by issuing temporary travel document so that she can return to Thailand.

If the agency is Thai i would also report them to the police and other authorities in Bangkok.

There is a Thai Embassy in Bahrain:-

Thailand Embassy , Bahrain

Building 132, Road 66, Block 360

P.O. Box 26475

Zinj Area

Manama

Bahrain

Phone:

+973-17274142

Fax:

But her problem might be getting there against her agency's wishes.

Best of luck.

I don't know about Bahrain, but certain countries require foreign nationals to have an exit permit before being allowed out of the country, and this will only be issued with the registered employer's express permission. In other words, those who "run away" from their employer become stuck in a limbo land and, even if able to obtain an emergency travel document from their embassy, cannot physically leave the country.

The basement of the Phillipines embassy in Kuwait used to be packed to the rafters with Filipinas who had been mistreated by their Kuwaiti employers but couldn't leave the country. The only solution was for them to have a new passport issued and to hand themselves in to the police, serve a prison sentence for deserting the employer and then be deported.

Scouse.
