Now that he's of no further use, the power behind Abhisit may want to tidy up things. I wouldn't automatically assume Thaksin is behind this.

You must be talking about Senior Tacksin, from Central America. :o

AK-47s are not that rare but M16s as used by the armed forces would be harder to come by.

AK-47 were produced in Zillions and I guess they are easily available in Cambodia/Myanmar.

Even in Croatia (or was it Serbia) after the war the price was approx 900 Baht (most probably for an old wear out chinese edition) (offer was that time 300 Austrian Schilling).

But M16s are not around every corner.

Checked some Thai and English web sites here in TH. Nothing mentioned about (yet)

Lets hope it was only propaganda!

NOW MAJOR HEADLINE ON THE BBC - SOME intersting comments to the reasons given for this shooting - even some thoughts about enemies from within the army and police seeing that AK47 were used and over 100 shots fired - he sure has a lot of enemies - and of course the REDS will get the first blame but there is a lot more to this than what people will think - intersting to see what comes of this - the yellows will be out for blood for sure --hope its not directed in the wrong direction - there was even a suggestion that he over critized the govt as he was instrumental in getting the present govt to power and he has complained that his mob has not got the recognisition that it should have from the govt--- well time will tell -- l

I heard from my army friend that the Reds would go underground, this will lead to the Yellows doing the same, so we will end up with an underground civil war in the heart of BKK akin the problems down south. My heart bleeds for the normal people of Thailand who want a normal harrasment free life. Its so different here than 10 years ago when I first came, its kind of depressing.

That's what somebody said in another thread yesterday

and brought up the possibility we could be looking at

both groups resorting to leaving bombs in public places-

-bit like we have seen over the years in Ireland :o

bye bye economic, bye bye tourism.....

If they used M-16's, doesnt suprise me that he survived. 5.56 doesnt have that much penetrating power. AK-47 is a different story but there have been conflicting reports by the media. Remembering that this was early morning in poor light with a moving vehicle so im sure a vast majority of rounds missed.

57 AKA? :o

AK 47 assault gun

it is not a gun --- there are shot guns - smooth bore -- used for hunting and skeet shooting and then we have rifles - like the M16 - AK 47 and another long barrel with rifling inside the barrel -= this is my rifle - this is my gun - this is for shooting this is for fun - 555

TOC News: http://www.thailandoutlook.tv/

An unknown number of assailants fired more than 100 shots at media mogul Sondhi Limthongkul's car this morning.

And he was only slightly injured? If I were the assassin's hirers, I would ask for my money back and hire some Russians to do the job. TIT.

It's actually unusual that they don't succeed. The owner from a hotel in Hua Hin got shot a little while back (also Thai), they pulled up with a motorbike next to his car and just unloaded a clip on him.

Maybe he's lucky because they didn't use a pistol... my guess is, they haven't had experience with the big guns and couldn't aim well. As much as I know he got hit on the head and shoulder, so he was quite lucky not to get killed. Maybe they thought his car might have bullet proof windows and they needed bigger equipment...

Anyways, I am happy he is still alive. Hope they catch the shooters and find out who hired them.

One question, what about the guys they arrested that were planning to shoot that guy working for the privy council, have they found out who hired them yet?

Well, I guess every soldier/weapon expert can confirm you will be certainly dead after receiving a 100 round shower from an AK-47...

Could that incident have been stage-managed? Not uncommon here in Thailand. I remember some cases with the dear leader involved years ago...

Very plausible.

The fact that 100 rounds from automatic weapons(at close range)and failed to kill anyone.

Suspicious.

They must have stolen the army's blank rounds that they used in the Red Shirt protests by accident! :o

Completely futile and inopportune post. IQ=10

Not really suspicious at all.  As anyone who has been in combat can attest, thousands of rounds are fired for any one hit.  And even in a specific target such like this, rounds, especially when sprayed from automatic weapons, go all over the place.  It would not be surprising to see only 10 to 20% of automatic fire actaully hitting the vehicle, and if the rounds were 5.56, the vehicle itself would stop many of teh rounds from penetrating inside too far.  As the driver was more critically wounded, I would assume that the gunmen were firing from in front of the car, so Sondhi would be even furhter protected by the seats and such.

I rather dislaike Sondhi myself and for most of what he stands, but this is a very bad development.  No one deserves to be shot for his political beliefs, but this could possibly expand into a never ending cycle of tit-for-tat which could drag this country into an outright civil war.

This is exactly the ratcheting up of instability that I was hoping for - the Thai Baht must now surely begin to decline as foreign investors get cold feet. Let´s get back to 60b = 1 UK pound... sooner rather than later. Coup now please...

By all means, lets kill people so you can enjoy a declining baht. What a sorry ass you are. :o

Despite the way Oldexplorer worded his post, I bet most farangs living here have one eye on the exchange rate whenever there is civil unrest. It takes guys like Oldexplorer to be honest enough to admit it. He didn't mention any wish for anyone to get killed, and the latest round of unrest hasn't led to many deaths. Wishful thinking hasn't led to the deaths so 'let's kill people' is irrelevant.

From The Nation:

Meanwhile Chamnong Paokorn, 53, a bus driver, said that he was driving his bus past Iamworanut Temple when he saw a blue pickup truck which had no license plate blocked Sondhi's vehicle. Then two men on the back of the pickup then opened fires on the vehicle. Then another vehicle sped to the scene and exchanged fires with the attackers who later escaped the scene.

Look like there was a kind of car escorting Sondhi. But early reports don't write about this.

It is hard to believe we cannot catch a break. Now we have some terrorists trying to take out an opposition terrorist leader on city streets. It will make for a good movie but won't do much for tourism. Sondhi should be serving a 20 year jail sentence for last years acts of terrorism. He may be safer in jail.

the red shirts AND the yellow shirts are destroying our country. Justice for all, means punishment for all...ALL the red/yellow criminals need to be arrested and jailed for their crimes against Thailand.

Only then will our PM gain the respect of the silent majority of good Thai citizens.

seems it goes the other way.....that won't please PAD and won't please the silent majority....

hmmm...maybe amnesty for all criminals is the path of least resistance. however, without consequences for criminal acts what stops the violence?

I think know we can officially change thier nick names from the yellow shirts and red shirts to the crips and the bloods. What a bunch of monkeys.

And finally its been said! We know that its all about two bull elephants fighting to be king of the herd - one's in hospital after an attempt on his life/last warning and the other has moved his family out of the line of fire and is operating at large around the world to destabalise, divide and conquor. As for the rest - well read the above!
