Hi all.

I was arrived Thailand last month. I am Web Designer and programmer from Sweden. I also do freelance webdesign for individuals and small local businesses.

Do you think it would be possible for me to work freelance as a web designer in the same way I am doing in Sweden (i.e. small time local projects) and if so what kind of work permit would I need?

Thanks for you help.

To get a work permit you either have to find a job with a company.

Or start your own company. Then to get a work will require hiring at least 4 Thai's.

Quite apart from the work permit/company considerations (see below - ubonjoe KNOWS his stuff!), you need to really think if you will be able to earn enough to live on. This of course depends on your own personal circumstances.

(a) Can you speak, read and write Thai?

(:) If so, you will be competing with a lot of local guys who are happy to earn 40,000 baht (or less) a month. Quite apart from cost and communication, Thais like to work with Thais (not unreasonably) so you will find it very hard to 'break in'.

© If not, who will you get work from? You may be able to pick up a job or two from local 'expats' etc., but enough to live on? Only you can tell.

Not trying to rain on your parade, but you need to think carefully about it. I work full-time here in the IT business (for a big multi-national, for seven years), and this is a low cost country with lots of local IT guys.

Good luck if you decide to try it though!
