There is nothing in the immigration rules to say that visitors to the UK must have a return or onward ticket. However any non-EU visitor may be asked by an Immigration Officer on arrival to demonstrate satisfactorily their intention to leave the UK within 6 months, and if they fail to do so they could be refused entry. If this were to happen then the airline they travelled to the UK with would not only have to bear the cost of returning them but would also be subject to a hefty fine. Therefore, despite it not being a requirement of the Immigration Rules, many airlines are reluctant to carry non-EU visitors to the UK unless they do have a return or onward ticket.

Although Canadian citizens do not need a visa to visit the UK, they are subject to the same immigration rules as any other non-EU citizen.
