Okay okay, stop sniggering!!!!

I live on the outskirts of Bangkok, near Don Meuang. I've just cleared a small patch of unused land at the back of our townhouse and want to know what I can do to attract some wild birds to the area.

There are still lots of trees around for them, what I really need advice on is what food to put out for them and what style of nesting boxes to put up, if any. Should I use a bird table, or is hanging food more successful?

Any ideas?

My experiments with bird tables in SE Asia have all failed miserably, I only attracted ants and rats.

Plant native shrubs and trees. I also think a source of water is more important than food, at least in the dry season.

Gos,

I have 500g of honeyeater tucker from harmonywildbird.com and some spare Lixit waterers.

Would that mix work for sunbirds?

These Lixit nozzles and stoppers fit most soft drink bottles.

not sure about that food.. but after reading on their site i would say just give it a try and see what species it attracts..

i was thinking more of the sugar water solution (nectar) that is used to attract Hummingbirds (none of these in Thailand, but the Sunbirds are very similar) those nozzles should be ok in a homemade nectar feeder

look here for solution ingredients..

Myself bought some steel hanging basket holders, and then put in the ring a plastic under flower pot round trays, as food trays get lots of birds.

Water I bought 2x 80 cm round deep ceramic trays which I put on top of ceramic stands.... looking out at this moment have 4 birds drinking out of one and 2 birds having a bath in the other pot

Nice & only U$19.95 each, the postage is the killer at $15 per Kg.

Thank's for the ideas everyone.

I'll definately try a DIY nectar bottle. I'll also try a bird table.

Has anyone had any success with nesting boxes?

If anyone spots a Sunbird in BKK, please let me know the location.

I've only seen one in 9 years & that was a Km behind The Emporium. :)

Olive Backed Sunbird is one of the most common species in Thailand.. including BKK

go to any of the parks (or virtually anywhere in between) and look again.. :)
