Fried Wireless Modem

Featured Replies

Can anyone tell me if modems are a repairable item or throwaways?

My wireless modem recently got fried by a bolt of lightning.

If I have to put it to rest in the trash bin can any of you guys recommend a decent quality replacement and what sort of price I’m looking at.

I live just outside Pattaya so Tuckom is only 20 minutes away.

Throw it away and buy a new one!

I had 2 wireless routers zapped as there was no UPS attached. Since UPS set up, no problems. Both we're thrown away.

Perhaps only the power supply unit is broken and not the modem? Lightning should not get much further.

Unless it came up the phone line (more likely).

It's dead mate, chuck it and get a new one repair is not likely to be economical.

Thanks guys.

The modem has been thrown in the dustbin.

I do have a UPS but i had a similar problem some years ago when i lived in Phuket and the repair shop engineer (farang) told me that UPS units are fine but only for giving you time (20 min’s) to finish your work in the event of a power failure.

UPS: An 'uninterruptible power supply' also known as a battery back-up, provides emergency power and, depending on the topology, line regulation as well to connected equipment by supplying power from a separate source when utility power is not available.

The engineer went on to say that when the computer is not in use especially in Thailand "shut it down and pull the plug"

You don’t always get the chance or like I do sometimes ‘Forget’.

The lightening or power surge (whatever) also got through to the tower which has now been repaired having a new motherboard and power unit fitted at a cost of 3350 Baht.

We had a lightning strike on our phone line as well. People actually saw the sparks shooting down the line. Fried the modem, the computer the modem was plugged into, the printer that was plugged into the computer and our fax machine. I was feeling sorry for myself until I saw the damage done at my neighbors. The bolt actually drilled a hole through the tile floor, split one of the roof beams, fried all the sockets, blew the hot water heater and air conditioner off the wall, fried his computer and modem as well and shattered the phone that was plugged in and charging.

Unfortunately, I've found that plugging the phone line into the UPS slows the signal down too much to be worthwhile :)

I'll second that. The line gets extra noise and the signal becomes very weak. BTW can someone recommend a "noise free" UPS?

The most UPS's I used all produced "noise"
