New Passport: Transfer Stamps At Immigration Or Not

Recommended Posts

I just got a new Dutch passport, I heard I should go to the immigration to have visa and stamps etc. transferred to the new passport, I also heard I don't need to do that, can just present the old and new passport together to the customs when leaving the country. After 3 weeks I'm leaving for 20 days, what should I do ? :)

add info: I'm on my 1st tourist entry now, one more available.

You should get your current stamp transferred, a quick, free and painless process at immigration. Your visa will remain in your old passport and will continue to be valid, simply present both passports on arrival.

If you don't transfer the stamps they will do it at the airport, there are reports that they don't like doing this and it can take some time. Best not to risk it :)

If you are going to be here for a while I suggest you get your permit to stay stamp tranfered over otherwise you will need to have both passports with you all the time.

You can just wait if you want though. Just remember you will need both passports to show immigration whe you leave.

They will not transfer your visa over so you will have to use your old passport to show the visa.

Granted it was a few years back, but when I last renewed my passport, immigrations basically didn't want to be bothered transferring my current entry stamp from the old passport to the new passport. The only reason they did it (grumblingly) was because I also needed a re-entry permit for that stamp.
