Heavy drinking leads to dementia in old age

BANGKOK: -- A long history of heavy drinking, using sleeping pills and tranquilisers significantly increases the risk of dementia in old age, warned a senior government doctor.

To avoid dementia in old age, people need to amend their behaviours – stop heavy drinking and taking pills that can affect brain cells, and avoiding chronic stress, Asst. Prof. Dr. Rungnirand Pradithsuwan of Siriraj Hospital's Medical School told TNA.

“Dementia in old age, though common, can be delayed when people take good care of themselves when they are younger, and in the present,” he said.

Regular exercise, controlling blood pressure, preventing head injuries, and reducing tension are the most effective ways to prevent dementia, he said.

“If you are troubled by increasing forgetfulness, then seek medical advice before it develops into a more serious symptom,” he said.

Anyone working here in Thailand will know that heavy drinking, pill popping, and chronic stress are all listed as prerequisites to fill the job description! :D

Gotta do it to keep sane... :o

Cutting back on heavy drinking and pill popping is a possibility... but how do you minimise the stress?

Everyday life (driving, shopping, trying to work with the Thais, etc.) produces stress levels that far exceed those in Falungland.

Huh ?

You need to pop pills to get over the stress of Thailand ?

This place is stress free - working with the Thais is fine - you ever worked with English people (moan, moan, moan) ? English weather ? English Traffic ?

Learn to laugh it off.

You may find that getting pissed & popping valiums/xanax is what is causing your stress. On giving up these things, my blood pressure & stress level dropped considerably.

Regular sex helps too.... but I am presuming you are already indulging...

You're probably right... I drink far too much coffee during the day to get myself going and far too much alcohol at night to put the day's activities behind me... a vicious circle. :D

And yes... high BP as well. :D

No probs on the regular sex front! :o

It is a well known medical fact, excess alcohol consumption damages/kills brain cells.

My brother recently passed away at 74, having spent the last 3 years in an "asisted living facility". He had been a heavy drinker most of his adult life. He was diagnosed with Dementia, Altzheimer and Parkinsons.

It is very sad to see the effect such a disease has on immediate family members, not to mention the financial burden.

-

In studying about Altzheimers, it was interesting to learn exercise does not seem to delay its onset, except, in one study, researchers found dancing did delay it's onset, for a few months. Doctors suspect this was due to the necessity to "think" about the steps you need to make, while dancing.

Mental exercise (reading, crossword puzzles, writing, etc.) all apparently "exercise" the brain and delay the on-set of diseases such as Dementia and Altzheimer.

As with most everything in life, it's a question of moderation.

An old guy I knew had been a heavy hard liquor drinker his whole life. He'd party all night, make it home in the early hours of the morning, sometimes got 1/2 hr's sleep but was never late for work, never missed a day. He would fall asleep at the tavern but would wake up 30 minutes later and had all the energy he needed for another drinking binge.

He spent the last few years of his life dressing up either like a scarecrow or a leprechaun.

I had a bad case of dementia during my teenage years. After a few scarey mornings not remembering driving home cured me of it. :o

Solution: drink like a hole as long as you're young. Once in dementia you'll hardly find your way to 7-Eleven... :D:D:D:D:o

Nobody knows the real or direct reasons to dementia. If you wanna live longer and healthier, of course you need a regular life, not overindulge yourself. But not everyone wants to live as long as a turtle which only walks tooooooooo slow (but still like turtle). Happiness is the most important thing in everyone's life. I feel sometimes heavy drinking can help me sleep better. So why not? So why ppl who suffer much more stress like sex more? They want to vent, which is also a good way to keep healthy.

So HAVE FUN!!!

Actually you get poor quality sleep when drunk. It disrupts the sleep patterns REM etc.

I agree with your policy though. More life in your years rather than more years in your life. What's the point of living till 100 if you can only shuffle about, don't know where you are and smell of stale P.I.S.S.

Hmmm, sounds like half the population here on TV.

The effects of heavy drinkin' finally kicked in - penzman couldn't tell a scarecrow from a leprechaun
