17 Inch Rim Tires Vs 16?

Featured Replies

My Fortuner came with 17inch rim size tires but the spare is only 16inch rim though seems to be the same when inflated overall size.

A few questions for my lack of knowledge here:

1.Is there any safety issues with mixing tire sizes on the back axel? Currently I have to since the town I am in says they don't sell 17inch tires to replace my blow out.

2.What is the advantages if any of the 17inch version? Another Fortuner I saw was fitted entirely with 16inch tires.

Overall size must be the same on a 4x4. If not you damage your 4x4 transfercase.

When Fortunr was facelifted half a year ago, one of the upgrades was larger brakes and wheels. But I know most 16inches can house those larger brakes.

The advantage of 17" over 16" is more metal and less rubber, which gives better handling on hard surface and less body roll cornering.

17" will give Slightly better MPG if gear ratios are same

To give any increase in mpg, overall size needs to be larger. This is hopefully not the fact with this suv.

It doesn't give better mpg,it only fools the odo meter.

This advice sounds good to me. On a 2 wheel drive vehicle, it's important that both tyres on the same axle are the same diameter, unless you are driving slowly, short distances, using a temporary 'wrong size' spare.

PLEASE can tyre experts in Thailand now help me? I need a 16.5in diameter tyre to fit ONE 16.5in x 6.75 steel rim. Part-worn or new? ANY legal tyre?

This is for the odd spare wheel on an old US pick up I'm restoring. And most people tell me that 16.5 dia tyres were never imported into Thailand!

A new one from the west would be far too expensive to justify. Please help if you can...
