hi there we are planning on getting married at the rocky resort, south lamai. Is there anyone who has been there? Is the beach nice at the resort? What was the staff like? has anyone else got married on koh samui if so please will u let me know how it went.

We are having about 30-40 family and friends meet us there for the wedding and some are flying a long way to be there for us so i would like to make sure that everything will be perfect.

If u have any info on weddings on koh samui we would be very grateful.

Thanks

We are also getting married at the Rocky this year. I have never been to the resort but the pictures look amazing and so far the staff have been really helpful booking rooms and offering advice to me.

I have had a email from a couple who married there last year, and they said it was fantastic.

If you get any more information or insight I'd be pleased to hear it?

I hate to rain on your happy wedding parade, but if you havent already booked at Rocky's, dont!

The place looks alright online, but you and your guests will be dissapointed when you get there. The Thai staff are actually great, but my friend who just stayed there (I stayed with her half the time) noticed that they were being treated very poorly by the drunken owners of the place.

I was so embarrassed to have recommended this place to my best friend, and unfortunatley she came during Songkran when there was no other vacancy on the island, so we had to stick it out.

It rained right on our bed during the middle of the night and we were handed a wine bucket. We made friends with some dogs on the property and were shouted at by the owner. We rented a jeep twice and both times it had no petrol to get us to the gas station, and you cant swim at their beach. The staff seem to be stretched so thin and they run around doing 5 different jobs at once.

There is a good wedding planning company in Samui called Faraway Weddings and they do some great stuff, type it into a search.

Good luck with your wedding!!! Congrats and please feel free to pm me if you need to know anymore!

Just for your information, LOVESUN is a former employee of Rocky's. She and her husband got married with us in October last year. They loved the resort and he came to work with us as a chef in January of this year. After five months it became clear that he wasn't able to get the kitchen working.... our food cost was still too high, the staff were serving cold steaks to the guests and cold french fries, and unfortunately we had to let him go.

Clearly they're still upset, and it's unfortunate that they're posting negative reviews about the resort to get back at us. I was very sorry to let them go and have no bad feelings towards them, however I think that this misrepresenting our resort to get back at us is a real shame.

I am not a chef, but seems that there is a service problem rather than a chef problem.....

I am not linked in any way to Rocky resort and I have never stayed there either as I live in Samui and operate other businesses here. I have many customers (including many wedding parties) that stay at Rocky resort and they always talk very highly of it. I have to go there to pick up guests and deal with management and administration staff for the consequent paperwork and always get great service from both the Thai and Farang staff. I was extremely surprised by the comment from lovesun that the management were drunk as they do not seem that type of people ... and certainly believe that it was from a disgruntled ex-employee.

Unfortunately that is one of the downsides of being an employer here in Thailand. No matter how well you treat the staff, it is extremely difficult at times. Many times over the years I have told a staffmember that they have done something wrong and they just get the huff and walk out. It can be small thing or large, you can talk soft or yell, it does notreally matter. I am the owner of the business and I have had customers yelling and screaming at me and have had to take the insults ... but I have learnt that I cannot then go and reprimand the staff member unless I am prepared for them to walk off the job. It is partly because Samui is such a growing place and that there are many job opportunities and partly a cultural thing.

I also believe that in the hospitality business it is extremely difficult to have consistently high quality day in day out, and from what I have seen (probably dealt with 80 - 100 guests staying with Rocky in the last year), I have not heard any complaints. To me that is extremely difficult to see anywhere let alone here.

I would have no hesitation in receommending Rockys to any of my friends or family ... other than it is on the other side of the Island to me and I have a house on the beach so tend to get a few staying with us.... try it and if its no good, come and stay at my place (no gauranteees about the service quality at my house though)

Conflict of Interests?

However it (Catering & Hospitality Industry) is all over the world one of the most difficult trades.

One faces the steadily reoccuring challenge to deal with many different people of varying backgrounds, demands, tastes, preferences, the lot.

And sure all these 'odd' things are happening, like a leaking roof, can't be fixed instantly, can it? A clogged toilet, a minibar simply 'letting go', there is an abundance of things that can go wrong and they certainly will, most of the time at a time where there is no instant fix or replacement available.

The same applies to the employees, I wouldn't point my finger at the locals, it's everywhere similar.

Here one has to deal with undereducated, partly very stubborn staff, some are so much up to themselves that there is no teamwork possible, many males have this "leader' attitude, but can't lead they only wanna be looked up to and followed.

Problems occur out of this many times some highly able staff will surpress their abilities and not come forward in fear of repraisals of the self proclaimed "leader".

Tough so in times, but still I love what I am doing, facing mobbing, blackmail from customers as well as from staff, operating above this abyss and remain 'cool' will take for the most, the "wind out of their sails"...

I had over the years (great luck?) very few, really disgruntled customers, usually a talk, a free drink will fix the "problems"...

And then to air ones 'probemes' in a forum as an anonymous critic is certainly NOT a fair way of doing 'business', clear and open words with the Management or the people responsible, is the way to go.

thats my 2 Cents

Samuian, I agreee totally with you about the hospitality industry issues, .... and your other comments on how to address the complaint ... no arguments from me.

Summary ... Rockys is one of the good locations to have your Koh Samui wedding. Like all locations it may have a few minor problems from time to time, but based on past recommendations from many people they either do not have many problems or have good staff and managment that tend to be able to sort things out well.

Maybe this is off topic, but beachedwhale IMHO had a run in on another post that isn't here no more. Correct me If Im wrong, but I remember you calling a post like yours, for free or cheap advertising, and here you are doing the same thing?

How the couple find a good place and have a great wedding!!

PS; this is just IMO.

I can correct you .. Someone else stated in the other thread it was a form of cheap advertising and I disagreed. I cannot remember who it was as the post has been withdrawn.

In my post above I was actually offering to let the customer come and stay at my own home (I do not have a resort or anything for rent). It was meant to be a bit toungue in cheek. I have a 3 bedroom house on the beach with 3 children, 3 cats, 4 rabbits, turtles etc etc. As my children remind me everyday, we do not have a swimming pool so really I was not advertising anything I have personally, I was just trying to reinforce that I felt Rockys was unfairly attacked in previous posts and was willing to stand behind my statement. My wife and Kids would probably not appreciate it if a wedding party did accept the offer and turn up.
