slippery when wet Posted May 10, 2009 Posted May 10, 2009 Hello all. basically my windows alert says that my computer is infected with trojans but I have Avira antivirus running whaich hasn't picked them up Could anyone tell me where I might be able to find a good antivirus that I can download. Thanks
Jiu-Jitsu Posted May 10, 2009 Posted May 10, 2009 (edited) Which Windows alert would that be? Ignore it. Download, install and update LINK REMOVED Run a Quick Scan. At the end of the scan choose 'Remove Selected' if any items have been found. Re-boot, run the program again, but this time run a Full scan. Remove Selected , and Re-boot. Ignore Windows Alerts. Windows does not alert you to the presence of malware. Edited May 11, 2009 by Reimar Link removed because of download location
newcomer01 Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 Good site to download the software. I use have used both AVG for the antivirus and Zone alarm for the firewall. http://www.filehippo.com/
Richard-BKK Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 Avast, and consider buying Avast Professional (both work very effective) Avast has a option to check the computer before Windows actually starts, this cleans most of the virus's other do not see or simply cannot remove with the standard package.
Jiu-Jitsu Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 Please ignore all of the above and follow my instructions.
Pierrot Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 I use Avast before but it slow down my computer so much that I had to remove it. Does anybody can recommend a "light" antivirus. I don't surf porn site, I don't open message I don't know the sender, and especially never open the attachment. I use a laptop with sometime a very slow connection, I really want to get rid of anything that slow down my computer and reduce my precious battery time.

I removed it in favor for Avast. Didn't realize any slowdown neither on my PC nor on my old notebook which has 512K Ram only...
Tywais Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 Ignore Windows Alerts. Windows does not alert you to the presence of malware. Not quite correct. Microsoft's Malicious Software Removal Tool will alert you (if malware found and after rebooting - so not real time) and if running Vista, Windows Defender will also do such in real time. So ignore the above.
Guest Reimar Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 Warning: Do NOT post links to any websites which host mainly pirated software like Rapidshare pp.! Offenders will be warned!
Daffy D Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 I have Avira Antivirus and COMODO Internet Security installed both are free with daily updates. These two programs seem to stop just about any nasties from downloading. They also install in the context menu (right click) so you can run a scan on a suspicious file by right click on the mouse. The only time I had something nasty was when I ignored Avira warning because the file looked so innocent.
Jockstar Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 I use Avast and have done for some time. I would recommend this and also Zone Alarm for your firewall.

Microsoft's Malicious Software Removal Tool will alert you (if malware found and after rebooting - so not real time) and if running Vista, Windows Defender will also do such in real time. So ignore the above. I'm quite sure that it won't state that "your computer is infected with Trojans". Therefore I'm reasonable certain that it is malware masquerading as an antivirus solution. So, ignore the above.
Jiu-Jitsu Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 From Microsoft(for the OP): Important note about fake antivirus Reports of rogue antivirus programs have become more prevalent lately. These are programs that generate misleading alerts and false detections of malcode in order to convince users to purchase the illegitimate security software. For example, programs such as Trojan:Win32/Antivirusxp and Program:Win32/FakeRednefed may display product names or logos in an apparent unlawful attempt to impersonate Microsoft products. These products may represent themselves as "Antivirus XP", "AntivirusXP 2008", "WinDefender 2008", "XP Antivirus", etc. If you have accidentally installed on these rogue programs, Malwarebytes' AntiMalware may be able to remove it.
wxpwzrd Posted May 12, 2009 Posted May 12, 2009 Warning: Do NOT post links to any websites which host mainly pirated software like Rapidshare pp.! Offenders will be warned! What on earth are you thinking? I expected better than that from some who has some technical knowledge. The upload is from MY personal online storage account. I downloaded a clean copy from the Malwarebyte website, uploaded it and made it into a Direct Download for the convenience of forum members. Direct download means that they don't have to jump through any hoops to get to the application. That, as you know, can be important to someone who has an infected machine. I don't give a hoot as to what others store on their Rapidshare accounts. If you can link me to an acceptable(in your eyes) online storage account that no one has ever used for pirate software or porn, that is reliable and allows for direct downloads, I'll use it. I'm providing a perfectly legitimate and convenient mirror for BM use. Not a porn link, pirate software link or even a Rapidshare web page in sight and you bring up the subject of pirate software?? I hope you don't turn this into a contest and leave me link where it should be, for the convenience of board members. Not at the mercy of some arbitrary argument. Here is the application again; <removed by me>. If you can provide a direct download link for the members from an alternative source, be my guest. But I certainly don't appreciate you lobotomising my work because of the fact that Rapidshare hosts pirate software on their servers. Which online service does not? Rapidshare are hot on removing such software from their servers if notified. Even if your file is legitimate no one in their right mind that has any level of security knowledge would download a file from your personal storage. If the OP wants to try the software I STRONGLY suggest pulling it from the original author's site.
ubonjoe Posted May 12, 2009 Posted May 12, 2009 Deleted post containing a link deleted previously and questioning moderator actions. A reminder to all that this is against the rules.
Guest Reimar Posted May 12, 2009 Posted May 12, 2009 Jiu-Jitsu: I doubt that you've a permission for to store that program, which is under copyright of the developer, on YOUR private (public open) storage space at Rapidshare! In case you didn't have the permission, you're on the same level as software pirates! On the other hand, if a security software developer allows private person (which I doubt!) persons for to store their software on an storage system which is hosting pirated contents, except a very small percentage of legal contents, I and many others wouldn't trust such developer anymore. You also breaking the forum rules for to indirect directing the users of Thaivisa to your File Storage location at an hosting system with mainly pirated stuff. If you like to promote that software, you could easy use the official and legitimate website of the developer. That triggers the question why on earth you want to get the members and guest's of Thaivisa to download from YOUR storage instead of the secure site of the developer?! Be warned NOT to post such links again.
Jiu-Jitsu Posted May 15, 2009 Posted May 15, 2009 Regardless of the pontification I see that over twenty people have downloaded and utilised the software from my link without mishap. Hopefully it has solved the OP's problem, especially if he went as far as installing the rogue software the "Windows Alert" may have suggested.
bloody tiger Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 Hey slippery, One other option, if you reside in thailand, although not free is to physically buy the "BITDEFENDER" anti virus sortware for around 200 baht. This is available at Se-ed bookstores and most computer centres (IT CITY etc) and is good for 3 years of updates. I had previously used Norton for about 5 years and for 2 years now have been using BITDEFENDER and am more than happy with it. 200 baht for 3 years is not free but dam_n close to free and actually not pirated!! cheers the blooded tiger
