Home Network: I Lose The Settings Everytime I Shut Down

Recommended Posts

I have just subscribed to TT@ T ADSL Premier 2 Mb connection in Pattaya.

I got a free router, but it only has one port, so until I get a multi port router I have set up a home network so that I can use the internet on a total of 3 computers.

I works fine.

Internet from adsl router, to PC 1.

Then run the home network set up wizard so that "other PC's can connect to PC 1".

Then 'outward' connection from PC 1 to hub, then from hub two PC's 2 and 3.

It works fine and all Pc's have internet connectivity.

But the next day, PC 1 connects OK but other Pc's won't connect to the internet.

So I run the home network set up wizard again, and everything works.

This has happened two days in a row.

What am I doing wrong? Why doesn't the home network stay 'as is' and the settings stay? There is nowhere on the wizard to 'save settings'. It is implied that once set up, that is it - alll done.

Any suggestions will be appreciated

Thanks

You don't need an multi port Modem, just an 5 or 8 port switch is ok and cost less (app. THB 500.00). Connect the modem with straight cable to the switch and the computers as well.

All you've to do is to setup the modem to PPPoE with the right VPI/VCI settings and the Username and Password.

If you don't know how to do please post the Modem: Brand and Model and all other relevant info's and you'll get help how to do the job.

Cheers.

I have an 8 port fast ethernet switch. I used to use it with my IPStar but it won't work with my new adsl router. It will only work by setting up the home network as previously described. (i.e. from router to PC then from PC to ethernet switch, after setting up home network.

The router is :ADSL CPE (Maxnet)

Model name: SmartAX MT880

Manufacturer: Huawei Technologies Co Ltd. (China)

I have user name and password. Web address is 192.168.1.1

OK, first you'll need an straight Ethernet Cable for to connect the modem to the Switch and NOT a Cross Cable!

Open your Browser and key in the address bar: 192.168.1.1, if you use IE7 or 8 you need to key in: http://192.168.1.1

The 192.168.1.1 should be the Modem IP!

User name: (should be) admin and Password (could be) admin (if not, you'll need to contact your ISP (TT&T?) for the settings.

Set the Modem to PPPoE and LLC. The VPI and VCI settings must be correct as well and you can get those from the ISP as well. MTU set to 1492 and set DHCP to enabled.

Unfortunate I don't know the settings from TT&T, maybe an other member can help you here better!

Have you ever try to access the Firmware of that Modem?

Cheers.

There are many pages, but I cannot work out how to:

"Set the Modem to PPPoE and LLC. The VPI and VCI settings must be correct as well and you can get those from the ISP as well. MTU set to 1492 and set DHCP to enabled."

No clues as to where I do this.

If I give you the password can you access the website, or do you need a modem to do this?

Please advise what is the difference between a "straight" ethernet cable and a "cross" cable. I have many cables, but they all look the same to me.

Sorry for being dim :)

I have the same modem - though I don't use it to manage the ADSL connection.

go to http://192.168.1.1

as your internet connection works you should not have to change your ATM settings , but it should look similar to this

Huawei-MT800-ATM.JPG

LAN config page - this is where the IP address of your modem is set

Huawei-MT800-LAN.JPG

DHCP mode page - this is setting the modem as a DHCP server , so any computer connected to the network with its network cofig set to auto will ask for an IP address and will be given one from the DHCP server between the numbers 192.168.1.2 and 192.168.1.254 - the DHCP server will also give it the gateway address which is the modem.

Huawei-MT800-DHCP.JPG

connect a cable from the modem ethernet port to the 8 port switch and connect a cable from each computer network port to the 8 port switch.

now we need to check that your computers are set to auto config of their network cards.

go start-->settings---> network connections , right click and select open

this will bring up a window with all your network connections

highlight local areaa connection , right click and select properties

go down until you see internet protocol TCP/IP

highlight and select properties

Huawei-MT800-network1.JPG

then set obtain an IP address automatically and DNS servers automatically

Huawei-MT800-network2.JPG

then save etc

see how that sorts you and let us know if you have any more questions
