nofreedomofspeechhere Posted May 16, 2009 Posted May 16, 2009 I was walking along the road (suk) area soi17 and I didn't see an ash tray anywhere so I put out my smoke in one the the lightpoles with the holes in the sides. Wrong on my part. I know this is not my country and I should have put it out and back in my pack. Next thing you know it's like I robbed a banks or something. I was hounded for about an hour. During that time while standing on the sidewalk/walkway I almost get run over by a motorbike. The police didn't care about that though because a motorbike could only harm or kill someone on a walkway. My cigerrette was a much more important issue. I had no money on me but I did have eye drops. Next thing you know they are trying to say I need a prescription for these and it's considered drugs. In front of me is a homeless guy peeing on a tree so I thought for sure they would arrest him and leave me alone. Thank God my lawyer was one block away and came quick to help me out of this mess.

BigSnake Posted May 16, 2009 Posted May 16, 2009 This Policeman(Men) was just indeed of a little lunch money, since you had no money they decide to give you the fifth degree, you did the right on thing, call in a Thai friend, your case a lawyer, it tell Police a very important thing>you got off the plane at night but not last night, in other words you have some Thai friends that know the Score, that is>the police are full of SH#T. Now you mention the homeless guy peeing on the tree, I recall recently reading somewhere that the fine for this is 500 baht, it just common sense from THEIR view point to come after you, the homeless has no money, they would have to arrest, take his in feed his, goodness knows the poor homeless guy has not had a shower for days or maybe even a week, now ask yourself who(if you were the Police) would rather go after(?) Nuff said
babuhavas Posted May 16, 2009 Posted May 16, 2009 once i was fined 300 baht for throwing cigg bud on road, after that i always check around, before puting down.

Nuff said story is fake but having to a call a friend in this situation makes you look like a fool. like a child who can't wipe his own ass. Next time at home when police is stopping me because I speed too much, I'll also call my friend to help me out :D Of course the story is fake, you don't need a lawer you need 200 Baht to fix that

grantbkk Posted May 16, 2009 Posted May 16, 2009 Anyone who smokes in this day and age knowing how bad it is for you and everyone around you is not smart enough to make this story up. Having to call someone for help for tossing a cigarette butt in Bangkok is pitiful. Are you British by chance? I bet you wished you finished school now don't you. You may have been given the tools to deal with these tough, real life situations that everyone has to deal with everyday. What a waste. The world is not your toilet. Cheers!

You can do as you like and drop litter! Just because the locals do it - doesn't you can or that its okay to do.... I as a smoker hate walking through someone else's just exhaled smoke on the pavement especially if you are walking behind them. I say keep fining them . i got once and had to pay b200 I even had put a plastic bag in the litter bin but my cig but on the floor. I have never done it since and am proud to say - i have never contributed to litter on the street ever since! Keep fining them and teach them a lesson.
Lost in LOS Posted May 16, 2009 Posted May 16, 2009 only jerks throw anything on the street. granted there are few trash cans here but you can hold it till you find one. they should increase the fine and yes, i am an american

nam-thip Posted May 16, 2009 Posted May 16, 2009 The argument to me is more about foreigners being unfairly targeted by Thai police. A mate of mine has twice been fined in Bangkok for putting his cigarette out on the pavement. And rightly so even though on both occasions he looked for a waste bin to find there wasn’t any. But……………What I don’t like about this so called law is that it is common knowledge especially in Bangkok that the police lay in wait for a farang to pass with a cigarette in his/her hand and will follow that person up to the point where he/she can’t find anywhere to dispose of it, and once they do a John Travolta on the stub they are lifted. On both occasions it cost my mate 500 Baht. Nothing wrong with that you might think, What is wrong is that farang’s are targeted as Thai’s have been known to either have ‘no money’ or simply refuse to pay. Personally, I’ve never smoked a cigarette or such like in my life.
Theyreallrubbish Posted May 16, 2009 Posted May 16, 2009 There may not be trash bins, but there are storm drains every few meters. Just throw your butt down one of the holes.

I wonder what would have happened if you just kept walking. BIB came up to me and started talking, didn't understand one darn word he said, so I just kept walking. After a few seconds he stopped following. If my wife was there, maybe I would have asked what he wanted but probably would have kept on walking.

Hard to believe. A lawyer got you off the hook? If you drop litter, it's clear cut: you broke the law and you have to pay a fine. There's not much a lawyer can do to argue that you were innocent. You had no money, and the lawyer came and got you off scot free and you didn't have to pay him either? Now that is an unusual lawyer ...
