An American friend had two hip replacements done on the same side in the U.S. When the 2nd one went bad he came to Bangkok and had #3 done by Dr Gobchoke at the BNH. This should be 10-12 years or so ago. He's been pleased with the job.

I think this #3 is holding up well but I've emailed him with the Q. He's in the Sandbox these days so might be some time before I get a reply.

I have had a first hip replacement about 20 years ago, done in Zurich (Switzerland). 14 years later the head and the part in the hip bone became loose and I had to replace these two components, keeping the shaft in the femur. Again done in Zurich (Switzerland).

I have had no more problem since and now live in Bangkok.

Surgical techniques and implants are evolving and getting better and better. While 20 years ago the life expectancy for a hip replacement was about 15 years, now it's much longer, 20 years and more.

The shaft is titanium an is no longer cemented. The head is ceramic and the pan (in the hip bone) is PET. Regular check ups and x-rays are recommended but as long as you have no problem, just enjoy life.
