Due to the insane prices of wine here and the state of my economy, I want to try making wine at home. I've done it before back home using raisins from burgandy grapes. That's one way, but maybe hard to find or expensive to import.

So, I'm wondering what local fruits taste the most like red wine and can produce a dry red tasting wine. Or, there are a few wineries here....do they sell their grapes??

Forget those sweet wines like lichee, strawberry, longan....have tried them and one glass is all I can stomach.

I have made excellent wine using mulberries. I even passed some off as french wine! But you have to use wine yeast. but you wont get good wine unless you can keep it at about 18 degrees C for six months. A special wine fridge is a must. I lived at 1100 meters near Chiangmai and built a wine celler into the mountainside. We made about 500 bottles. 25% were fantastic, 25% good, 25% drinkable like house wine. 25% not too good but consumed by the Hash House Harriers

Never considered the temp.......now 35 degrees C [in CM valley] and underground temp maybe down 5 more degrees, so a refridgerator will be a must......adding to the cost.

Mulberry wine, sounds drinkable, was it sweet or dry??

Lucky you are to live at 1,100 mtrs.....just out of curiosity, where?

You could always head out and buy a few crates of grapes and crush and ferment from there. May need to experiment a little to find a good grape and forget the red as that would involve skin fermentation and right equipment.

I have decided to give wine making a go and read your thread. As a complete novice I would really appreciate some guidance so that my first attempt isn't doomed to fail.

Where is a good place in Bangkok to buy equipment? Does anyone have any recipes that I can follow? How critical is the temperature? I thought the Bangkok climate would be ideal but reading the thread it sounds not.

you can try your regular local bottle apple and grape juices without any preservatives.. they work pretty well for an every day wine..
