I volunteered at a hospital in UK as part of training in an earlier life as i needed to get my hours up, and yup i had to pay for the privallage of being vomited on daily.

So Stiggy, your volunteerism, was actually done to further your career and probably make more money. It wasn't done out of the goodness of your heart?

Well, in an "earlier life", I was very active in volunteer work in the U.S. I volunteered at hospitals, cancer centers for children, telephone crisis lines, juvenile judicial system, Big Brothers, community theatre groups, opera companies, museums, etc.

Never once, did I have to pay/donate or was even asked to "donate" any money for the privilege of volunteering. My time spent/work was my donation.

Yo! Stiggy my man. I just thought of this. We have something in common...

During the years I helped out at the cancer center for children, I got vomited on also. People on chemotherapy vomit and often.

Dealing with Ulcerated wounds from diabetics plus rotting feet , radiotherapy on cancer patients that had problems healing, Parkinsons patients, the odd diving accident, altitude sickness plus people exposed to high Carbon monoxide doses.

So trained in UK Australia based in Asia.

I e-mailed them asking about the visa/workpermit situation.

The answer rather skirted round the situation, refering to visas for Cambodia, not Thailand.

Regarding your question about visas or permits, you do not need a work

permit to visit or volunteer in Cambodia.

If you are thinking of volunteering / visiting here for a month or

less, you come in on a tourist visa, which costs $20.00. This is a

simple form that you complete on the flight from Bangkok or at

arrivals in Siem Reap International airport.

If you wish to volunteer or visit for a longer period, you come in on

a business visa, (same process as above)which is also for a month but

gives you the opportunity to extend for up to a year without having to

re-enter the country. your passport is sent to Phnom Pehn (the

capital)for a total of three days, through a reputable travel agency

that we use frequently, and returns with the required extension dates.

A 6 month extension will cost $165.00, for example.

Here is the information from our orientation guide:

Visa Requirements

Visas are easily obtained on arrival at Siem Reap and Phnom Penh international

airports.

Visas are available at border crossings with Thailand and Vietnam but

not always

with Laos.

A tourist visa costs US$20 for 30 days, this can easily be extended in

Siem Reap for another 30 days only.

A business visa costs US$25 for 30 days and can be extended in Siem

Reap for an

indefinite period of time.

Therefore if you are staying for less than 2 months you need to get a

tourist visa, state that your visit is for tourism. If you plan to stay

for more than 2 months then you have two choices: -

1. Get a tourist visa, extend for one month and then leave the country

and return to get a new visa and start again.

2. Get a business visa and extend in Siem Reap for as long as you wish.

Be aware that a passport with at least 6 months validity is required.

You will also need to provide immigration with a passport size

photograph.

Airport departure tax is US$25.

A new online service has recently started to obtain a tourist visa via

the internet:
