I'm going to get a letter from a family member saying that they have a room for the 'exclusive' and 'indefinte' use of me and my wife when we get over there. Are there any other things which really should appear in the letter. Can anyone give me a rough outline of how the letter should go?

eg.

To whom it may concern,

I am the owner of a five bedroom house with four currently occupied. I hereby declare that I have a bedroom available for the exclusive and indefinate use of, by John and Jan Doe.

something like that?

That should be sufficient regarding the accommodation. Evidence of means to support her will probably be sought too.

You may want to include something that shows the person writing this letter actually has the right to offer the room. ie a lease agreement or rates notice or somethingn with there name and that particular address. A telephone bill or something like that would probably not surfice as that doesn't prove they live there.

When using the words "I hereby declare" then a Stat Dec is the best format for that sort of statement. When making any statements on paper to immigration a stat dec wont hurt. :o

I just wrote a letter signed it my self and included my rates notice showing I owned the house. They gladly accepted that even though they know I live in Thailand.

Go figure.

It might be over the top, or it might be the reason we never had any troubles but I added a lot of info in my stat dec, medical will be covered by me, all costs that may be incurred by her I take full responsibility etc.

worth a thought.

what's the best way of getting a declaration done?

if in LOS then take the Docs' advice, if in Oz then you can buy a Stat Dec at most newsagents and ask there if they know a JP, if not, look in the phone book.

amwap,

A letter as you outlined will be fine. Just have the writer insert a sentence to the effect that he/she is the owner/lessee of the property. If the owner, then evidence of mortgage/ownership should be submitted and if a lessee then a letter from the landlord giving his consent for you and your wife to live there.

Cheers,

For two pounds you can do an online land registry search which you will be able to print (ie will give you the owners name without him having to supply you with any private/sensitive mortgage documentation). Just a thought.

What is the fastest way of getting the letter? I'm in a little bit if a rush and I know the post system can be really ssssllllloooooowwww. But I suppose the letter will have to have a nice blue ink signature and the envelope stamped from England. Or is there a faster way?

Hi amwap,

Try www.landregisteronline.gov.uk Apparently it's all the rage now in the UK with people checking to see for how much their neighbours have flogged their house.

With regard to the letter a fax should suffice.

It would really help if when enquiring about doing this or that, that members include country of residence, country to visit etc....

It would make it a lot easier to give correct information.

Well, I'm talking about Going to England and it seems that the majority of the posts going on in this forum are to England, also I know that Scouse is a limey and he's always full of chewy chunks of vital info.

Speaking of which, the faxed letter should be faxed to the embassy? Or do I pick it up at an internet cafe and take it in with me? Is there anything else that should be included in it?

amwap,

Get the letter faxed to you and then supply it to the embassy with the bundle. Alternatively, the writer can prepare and sign the letter, scan it and then e-mail it to you to print. If the letter it solely to do with provision of accommodation in the UK then it should just refer to this.
