Can anyone either post or point me to where I might find comparisons of the Thai bt with it's peer currencies say over a 5 year period, and likewise it's GDP compared to peer nations. I think this might clear up a few misconceptions either way about how Thailand is doing.

My guess is it's a bit of a laggard with an over valued currency.

I think you will find that Thailand has indeed lagged a bit in growth from some its neighbors, but GDP is second only to Indonesia, which has over 3 times the population.

You must be a brit or Euro sort of guy by your currency comment. Against the USD, the THB is at a 2 year low.

TH

Rank Country GDP (millions of USD)

1 Indonesia 496,800

2 Thailand 272,100

3 Malaysia 214,700

4 Singapore 192,800

5 Philippines 172,300

6 Vietnam 90,880

7 Brunei 17,180

8 Burma 13,700

9 Cambodia 10,820

10 Laos 5,187

Most of the info you need can be found on www.yahoo.finance.com

For instance choose 'currency' from the drop down menu on the 'investment' tab

select 'currency converter' tab

select your currency pair

click on 5-day trend, once there you have a choice of graph type (bar/line/candle) and range (1d/5d/3m/1y/2y/5y)

More information on related matters but much more fun to exploring yourself

Another educational (and very entertaining) link, giving a good insight into economic trends in the UK related to oil production is www.propertyInvesting.net specifically reports 257 and 262 - not related to the subject of your post but recommended reading

Hope this is of use.
