Intel I7 Or Intel Quad?

What do you want to do with the computer? Not many things out there support a quad core cpu for normal functions. If you need high performance without a high price, consider one of the faster dual cores. It really all depends on what programs you use and what you want to use the computer for. Also, how much do you want to spend on a new computer?

I need it sometimes for video editing (Sony Vegas, Sony DVD Architect) & I am not a gamer but I would like to see at least one time the FS X running at higher settings...

Since I do not buy a new computer so often - every 5 to 7 years - it should be a better one. So my budget for it without monitor is about 50,000 to 70,000. But I am not sure if it makes any sense to take the I7. Might have to stick to some questionable test reports if no-one here has one. But they are more confusing - some say that the old Quad is sometimes faster.

I know that most software does not use multi cores (Sony video software does and the FS X a bit). So I hope the hyper-threading at the I7 does a little bit more and does not have the negative effects it had with the Pentium 4 anymore. But perhaps I better should wait for the I8 :)

for the software you use - what do the people on the forums that discuss and help with that software say ?

that is probably the best place to find out if it is worth moving beyond a normal dual or quad core .

That is a good point. Will scan the internet for I7, my Sony software and FS X. Just was somehow hoping to hear a stay away from the new I7 or forget the old Quad to make it easier for me.

i dont know what is better but my computer aspire M7720 has the I7 chip and it flies. being in the construction business 40 years I learned on big lesson. When I buy equptment I but the latest and the best, it lasts longer and stays current longer so it saves money in the long run.

Thank you for your response. I think the same - buy the latest and the best and not scrap several times. Found a review of your computer here:

http://www.pcworld.idg.com.au/review/deskt...re_m7720/269353

They write that it is a great computer with the I7 - what is for sure. But that

"The M7720's benchmark results aren't impressive when comparing against past systems we have looked at, but you have to bear in mind that it runs at 2.6GHz, whereas most Core 2 Duo-based PCs we see these days are 3GHz, and that the real benefits of the CPU come into effect while heavily multi-tasking or running software that can use multiple CPU cores."

That is pretty much what I find everywhere. I7 at higher speeds? Not cheap... Perhaps I should look for AMD...

So I see - the new CPUs are great for software using it. The problem is to find the software using it... I think that Intel and AMD reached a heat point for their CPUs where they could not add to frequency anymore. So they tried to use multiple cores. The software could not follow... If Intel/AMD do not have a great idea then this might be a severe stop. Why should I buy a chip for which almost no software is available?
