Mobi
Have you noticed that they are putting down road markings (white direction arrows) near several of the junctions of the two new "local" roads that run either side of the rail road tracks, indicating they will be changed to one way roads? The road running east of the tracks has markings on both sides of the road pointing south, and the the road running west of the track has some markings on both sides pointing north. They have also moved some of the road signs at junctions from the west side to the east side as they are pointing south. In the meantime, my friend nearly had a heart attack when I drove on the east side road and all the road arrows were pointing in the opposite direction. There is little doubt what is going to happen, and it will be an excellent improvement when implemented. The question is: "when?" In the meantime expect even more mayhem and accidents. I suppose even when implemented there will be many Neanderthals in pick-ups and motorcycles who will insist on driving the wrong way down the newly designated one way roads. It wont be much of a bypass if just one way as those wishing to go to Bangkok will be on the old road but whatever happens its nit gonna be good for me wanting to go out or come back as will traffic backed up due to traffic lights....it all ready gets backed up quite far getting to sukhumvit down soi khao talo now and especially at peak times
LennyW
It is meant to be one way, east side - south, west side - north, but still a free for all today!! It was supposed to be officially open on Sunday 24th May with 12 days to sort out any problems, wont hold my breath. The traffic lights are in place, and they are placed correctly for one way rob, however they are only flashing at the moment. This road will need some serious policing in the early days to educate all drivers to the directions, lights etc. There are 2 cement plants at the south end near the Huay Yai junction, on the southbound side, they are only about 100 & 200m from the Huay Yai road, do you think the trucks going in there are going to make a few kilometer detour to do a u turn and abide by the direction of the road?? This road is mega dangerous, take care!! This has been repeated at other points. I travel on these roads extensively, and there is little doubt what is planned. It's just a question of when, and how they plan to implement the change. When they do something like this in Bangkok (changing roads from one way to two way or vice versa) they have squads of traffic police out to control the traffic. Can't see that happening in Pattaya. Again strange decision as the westside road is much narrower the the other side and by the way already heavily damaged between khao talo and khao noi. They have that in pattaya also, remember the traffic police at the crossroads. The only problem is that they are real specialists in f_cking up the traffic and when it gets really busy they just sit down at the site of the road. I had an accident once where Khao Talo crosses the bypass,a car drove into the back of my motorbike while I was waiting to go straight.1 of the traffic puppets stood next to my motorbike while it happened and 2 others stood at the right side of the road.None of them had noticed what happened. Not so basjke, the traffic light placement and new arrows clearly show the west side will be one way north, there are however old arrows still painted on the road for when it was two way!!!! All very confusing and DANGEROUS!!!!!

You could be correct, but I don't think so. The two way arrows on the west side road that you are referring to have been there a long time. I think that they haven't got round to changing them yet. I'm almost positive that I have seen two lots of arrows pointing North at another section of the west side road. But I might be wrong. I shall be driving down it tomorrow, right down to Chaiyapruk 2 so I will check. But the signs that used to be on the westside road junction, showing right to Chaiyapruk, have now been moved to the eastside road. Let's see - the tension is killing me

I can understand the exit is useful for those going Huay yai but to which use is the entrance if there is no traffic towards it.

That is a very interesting observation. I wonder if someone forgot to tell the road constructors of the change in road directions? If correct, maybe the traffic will have to go the wrong way along a one way road to get to the entrance - not unheard of in Thailand. Or maybe they will make a short stretch of the road two way so that traffic can have access to the entrance. Fascinating stuff
LennyW
I just noticed now that all the crossings have CCTV cameras installed, high grey poles with a dome camera on the end!! Dont know if they are functional yet, if they are, who's watching??

If you are referring to the Thai man who is probably drunk and sleeping in an office when he should be watching ALL the cams in Pattaya, then the answer is, NOBODY IS WATCHING. Or if you were referring to the group of people in the main CCTV office who are playing cards all day and night instead of working, then again, your answer is, NOBODY. tattoodrob
Sorry my mistake ...it definitely is one way.....dont know why i thought i see traffic lights......anyway still gonna be a nightmare to cross 2 bypass roads, a railway track and then go across Sukhumvit too......its gonna be a right pain and a definite accident road with so many small junctions along it....aint gonna be much of a fast bypass....also im guessing to get on the overpass/bridge then you will have to go up the one way then uturn to come back and get on that one! im guessing the cctv is so they can record the accidents then send them off to some of those tv programs and get some money.." worlds worst motor accidents" or such like. seadoo
Look guys, we all know that road markings in Thailand are only a suggestion - they will simply drive the direction they want whether it is one way or not - like riding face on into a stampeding heard of bulls - whilst thinking - I will be okay - Buddha will save me
LennyW
Well well, i see today that signs have appeared at the Chaiyapruek 2 junction saying that as of the 8th, that be Monday, this road will be ONE WAY !!!!!!!!!!!!! seadoo
It will be a field day - should I say week - for the BIB being able to collect tea money for going the wrong way - and watch out getting caught on the junctions between the tracks - they have painted big yellow criss crosses on the road which you are technically not allowed to sit on. Might just grab a bag of popcorn and a drink and sit by the roadside and watch the show - should be some interesting moments.

seadoo
From what I have been told by a local BIB volunteer - this was changed for the main reason that a lot of people get paid mid month and end of month and the 15th is the Monday directly after the next mid month pay period. So the BIB have more chance to collect tea money on the 15th rather than the 8th, and from what he told me they are planning a big swoop along the whole length of the road on the first couple of days of the changeover to catch people going the wrong way or stopping on the yellow criss cross between intersections and the flyover bridges. basjke
Only a few more hours before D-day.I am considering to wake up early to the first spectator when the show starts. And a show it will be with no traffic signs at all other then the signs at the major cross section.I said no traffic signs but actually there is 1 I am aware of.It is on the cross section with soi Khao Talo on the western side road left side of the section if you come downhill. It is a black arrow on a white background pointing out the driving direction...................only problem is that it is pointing in the wrong direction
Mobi
I was there yesterday and it was amazing how much traffic was still using both roads as two way. Considering all the signs are up and the old arrows blacked out and new arrows painted on the road pointing the same direction for two lanes, you would have though that it would have been wise to stick to the "correct" road. But not a bit of it. Traffic as normal. There was one car in front of me who obviously did not know the road too well, as when he approached the junction he signalled right, saw the arrows in the outside lane and switched to that lane. There was very nearly a head on collision. Most of my friends refuse to drive on that road as they say it is too dangerous, but I have been using it since day one. However tomorrow I think I'll give it a miss. Might take a stroll round Central instead.
LennyW
Well today is the day ONE WAY!!!! No doubt the BIB will be out in force to "smooth" things along, so remember your seat belts and the speed limit is 50 kph, Take extreme care at the junctions, dont take anything for granted.
