Thai Reality Shows With Kids?

Featured Replies

I turned on the television on my last visit to Bangkok and saw a reality show with kids between the ages of 5 and about 12. To me this seems quite exploitive, but on the other hand, I am not sure its any worse than kids in commercials.

Do you think this is just another acceptable step up the commercial ladder or is it too much?

You don't have to signal a social conscience by looking like a frump. Lace knickers won't hasten the holocaust, you can ban the bomb in a feather boa just as well as without, and a mild interest in the length of hemlines doesn't necessarily disqualify you from reading Das Kapital and agreeing with every word. ~Elizabeth Bibesco

I think it depends on what kind of reality show. What was it about?

There used to be one on Saturday afternoons 3 pm on Channel 3, I think, where kids would be videoed in all sorts of situations, including ones where they get upset and eventually start crying. The audience would be laughing their heads off, including the kids parents who submitted the video. shrug.gif TiT.

TIT? You see this anywhere in the world, particularly American television. I'm not sure if it's good or bad, but it happens. In the U.S., look at the myriad of shows following stars and their families, or even normal people and their families. Look up "Kid Nation." Well, I think some countries may frown on this, but you will see kids on reality shows in many countries. In Thailand, they really love to focus on the innocent cuteness of kids and what they'll say, so for them to be on television is entertaining to many Thais here. I know, everybody thinks kids are cute but for Thais I think it's more so.

I think some of the talent shows are now featuring little kids too.

Too many troubled child stars out there who grew up with no childhood and no real life and end up completely screwed up for me to think its a good idea.

Indeed TIT. Have you actually seen what goes out on Thai TV? Like I said, they are crying, the camera zooms in to them bawling their eyes out, they are obviously distressed and the audience is laughing at them.

I've posted about this before: http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/Thai-Tv-Prog...t&p=2070658

This isn't reality TV, it's tormenting for fun. (And a few baht from the show if your video gets shown).
